My Mood: | $$ to Paint a CT70? What have you paid?
A lady at work has a husband that has a body shop. He quoted me 500.00 to paint my CT70 Body, swing arm and head light. Thats with me buying the paint and having it sandblasted. What have others paid to have their CT70's Painted? Thanks Muxster |

I just painted mine myself. I did the sandblasting and the paint materials cost about $75 and was waaaaay more than enough. If you're using the proper color shade for primer, a pint will be more than enough to paint frame, swingarm, and HL bucket. I honestly can't tell you what a fair price is for the paint work. There isn't much labor involved. $500 seems like a lot to me if you're paying for materials and sandblasting. Whatever bodywork there may be is nothing for a body-shop guy. What type of paint are you planning on using? Three stage candy? single stage urethane? urethane base coat clear coat? Also, is he going to wetsand and buff everything after painting or is it just he paints it and he's done? All of this factors into the cost. I did my bike from start to finish in an afternoon. Also, on a side note...I know some people are for and some are against, but I just got a quote of around $150 to powdercoat a whole frame (that has been sandblasted) in candy red. About half that price if it's just a straight color.

I stopped by a paint shop last week and the guy quoted me "about" 250.00 for a PPG 2 stage pearl if I brought in ready to paint...he also said for that price he would shoot an extra coat of clear for me.

Labor rates depend on the complexity of the paint job. Kandies are harder to paint then primer/basecoat/clearcoat jobbies. Get multiple bids, see other customs the shop has painted and then pick the one that fits within your budget for the quality of work being done. |

I had my frame and all accessories powdercoated for 150. The other ct70 I painted myself and the paint and all needed items ran 110.

It would be to color sand, clear coat etc. This guy does really nice custom work and it would not be any slouch job. The paint would be the Epoxy paint that is for sale on the site that people here referenced. I am just shopping. Have new front end coming soon here...NSR forks, ALum Tripple Tree, disc brake setup G-Craft Billet hub. So it's a cosmetic debate vs. planning a power plant. Since I have a working 140cc moto that is running etc. I am more apt to make the bike look sweet. | |

I had a Candy paint job done on my CT70 frame, headlight bucket, shock caps, fork legs, chain guard. Paid $400 and took it to him already blasted and ready to paint.

I did a poor mans kandy with some decent results on a smaller project using rattlecans. I used the Duplicolor red Metalcast over Duplicolor Shimmering Gold. It turned out kinda cool.

If he is doing a real candy job and really sanding out the clear, $500 is completely reasonable to me depending on what your time is worth and how much you like sanding. Consider a job with an etching primer, primer, base, candy, then 3 coats of clear. He's shot everything 7 times and still hasn't started to sand the clear. While it is small, there are still nooks and crannies to try and sand without busting though. Popping through on a candy is nothing like a normal paint job. Also the candy does not shoot like paint and super easy to screw up. Folks say they can fix, I say you can tell. I painted my bikes and still think the torture is worth doing yourself (but not because it is cheaper). |

I agree that it's hard to put a price on a good paint job. $500 doesn't sound all that bad and if he color sands and buffs the paint it just might be a good deal. I painted my pink bike using the best paint from PPG by myself. It turned out better than I thought it would, I spent $262 just for paint (single stage base) and materials, and paid a guy maybe $50 to blast all the parts. I had to mask off my garage mixed all the paint then spray it,it took some time. I'm sure a pro would have done it better but I have to admit I love when people ask "who painted the bike?" It's nice to have finally painted one myself, but like I said $500 isn't too bad for a pro job....
