RySem's CT70 Built Thread

It seems that finally I am going to start my CT70 street cruiser build. It will be sort of a frankenstein of parts...a restomod if you will (have no fear purists, I have two others that will get restored to original specs). I will be starting with a 71 K0-H frame that someone has absolutely terrorized via spraypaint. It has about 6 different layers on top of the original candy blue-green paint AND decals. I just ordered the paint tonight. It will be Daytona Yellow. I ordered up a set of those nifty K0 carbon fiber look decals and side badges. That's about as far as I got with definite plans so far. I purchased a YSR50 disc brake front end from shawnbassett26 that I may try to fab up. As far as engine goes I'm torn between using the brand new 3-valve lifan 110 I have or doing a big bore honda motor. I think with my limited funds currently I am swaying more toward the lifan for now, as I want to go 12v anyways. I'm sure it will be a good motor if I'm relatively easy on it. Welp, that's about it for now...just a quick intro. Will try to keep the thread updated with pics as progress continues. Here are some pics of what I'm starting with.

Re: RySem's CT70 Built Thread

Tonight I had enough time to get things a little bit more organized. I will be getting it together with a nice stock K0 front end for now. I took the forks apart (in amazing condition surprisingly enough) and the upper part is all ready for the sandblaster. I also dug out a set of fenders I had here that someone had painted. I'll blast those and paint them up black maybe. I also have a set of decent chrome ones so we'll see what I like better. The chainguard I have needs a little bodywork, so I'll blast it and get that taken care of. Gotta dig out the swingarm tomorrow and I'll be ready to start sandblasting everything. I love it when a plan comes together! Stay tuned...more to come.

Re: RySem's CT70 Built Thread

I'm finally making forward progress. I have purchased a TRX70 bottom end to use as a starting point for my engine build. I looking at a big bore stroker of sorts but nothing set in stone yet. Here are some photos of today's festivities. I'm thinking paint this weekend.

Nice... Are you taking the head tube Honda plate off or are you going to paint around it?

I taped it off for blasting and left a little around the edges of it as you can see. I'm gonna clean that up by hand. As far as paint goes I think I'm just going to tape it off and spray over it. The paint hasn't been removed under it so I'm not concerned with having bare metal leftover. I could always pop it off and rivet it back on but I'd hate to do that really.

If you apply a light coating of wheel bearing grease to the plate before spraying the frame, when the paint is dry and cured you can just clean it right off. Same goes for any external threads you don't want painted (top shock mounts, e.g.).

Re: RySem's CT70 Built Thread

Some more news now. I just bought an engine from the classifieds. XR50 engine with Takegawa 88 kit and head and some other mods. It will be cheaper in the end and less chinese parts than if I were to build up the TRX motor. Also, my new front end finally came in. It's looking like I'll be able to bore out the holes a little bit in a set of CT70K3 triple clamps and slide the YSR forks right in, so I'm pretty excited about that. I'll post pics when I get that together. Could be a simple and cheap upgrade for many CT70ers.

Re: RySem's CT70 Built Thread

hey, let me know when it is done and we will go riding. I have 3 mini's that are street legal, I just have to register a couple of them. I'm over in Danbury area but I'm sure we could meet up and maybe even get a few more people in on the ride.

Sure sounds like a plan to me! It seems like we're a bit deprived as far as street minis go in our neck of the woods. I'd be down for some riding thru new milford, kent, etc.

Re: RySem's CT70 Built Thread

rt 7 and rt 202 are awesome for riding but you really have to be capable of constant 50 mph and at least 60 mph top speed. There are a good amount of places to cool down if your bike needs it though; mine sure will. With all of the cars doing upwards of 60 mph it is a bit scary going slower than 50-60. Most guys in new england like riding in dirt. If you need any help plating your bike or with your bike in general let me know.

More pics coming. I got piles of parts...just a matter of which ones I'll use. It's a real hodgepodge.

Re: RySem's CT70 Built Thread

Here are some more pics.

This is the seat I'll be using. Not too bad at all. I will fix a couple of VERY small cracks, strip it, repaint it, and recover it. I won this thing on ebay for 30-something shipped. An ebay seller is making some nice looking covers and will do custom stenciling on the back, so I'm thinking I might try to come up with something. Though simple, I kinda like the idea of TRAIL 70 in an italic font. Any other ideas?

Here is the YSR50 front end I picked up from shawnbassett26. It has team calamari racing springs, new seals, powder coated lower legs, ohlins fork oil, rebuilt caliper, and kevlar brake line.

Today I modified a CT70 K3 lower triple clamp to accept these fork tubes. I just had to ream out the holes to 1.0625". Here is a pic of the triple post-sandblast.

A comparison of the YSR forks to the stock CT70 ones. They are almost identical in length.

Here is a pic of the swingarm and the chainguard in the blast cabinet.

My goal is to have this thing painted on Friday. I have to move my father's pro-street Rambler project out of the garage and Friday is looking like the only nice day where the car can sit outside. I'll have the furnace cranked up to about 80. I picked up some etching primer to spray on the bare metal as a base and then some white primer to topcoat the daytona yellow urethane paint over. The paintjob will cost me a total of about $130. I am using Restoration Shop paint from TCPglobal.com. I've heard good things about it and the price absolutely cannot be beat. I need to paint my 68 Rambler in the spring so this is a trial run to test out the quality of their paint before I shoot a whole car.

Re: RySem's CT70 Built Thread

what size axles does a ysr run? and are you running ct70 wheels? you could probably snag up a chink disc front hub for a ct 70 cheap since that is what all of the skyteam st90's and similar bikes run. maybe some nice aftermarket aluminum rims. do you have a tank or bars yet? what are plans for lighting? do you have the original hand controls for the lights?

I'm trying to avoid the chinese parts if possible. I am going to modify my stock hub to accept the disc while maintaining the stock speedo drive. This is if all goes according to plan. The forks were bored out to use a 12mm axles. I may have to make some little inserts for the bottom of the tubes to accept the ct axle. I'm probably gonna chrome the rims. I have about 3 too many tanks if you need one. As for lighting I got this Kitaco headlight from DrATV.

I am going to have to swap out the bulb for a 12v one, not sure if I like the blue or not. For tail light I will most likely be using a stock K4 type setup. I am probably going to do LED bulb. This isn't set in stone though. As for controls I will be using standard motorcycle type bars, probably from a honda S90...not set on switches and such yet.

cdoublejj: You'd have a heck of a time polishing up a steel swinger. It'd pretty much have to be either custom aluminum or chrome plated.

Today's update: I got my new thumper exhaust and my new paint from UPS today. I also designed and made a custom aluminum upper triple plate for use with the ysr forks. It was cut on a CNC waterjet and I will be buffing it up soon. I am not set on what handlebar mounts I'll be using so, I'll just drop those holes in later when I have everything figured out. Still on track for paint tomorrow.
