#'s Matching? (KO / K1 / K2 frame and engine combos)

Are frame and Engine VIN's somehow supposed to match? Z50A (K0 /K1 / K2)

On most of the bikes I've seen the engine VIN (left side case right by the drive sprocket) never seems to have anything to do with the frame VIN (left side back of frame / & head tube)

What gives?

they fit into a range of numbers, but they don't match exactly.

http://www.hondatrail70.com/z50id.htm

look for the serials on the model, and the numbers should fall into the number groups.

K0
Frame: z50A-100001-
Engine: z50AE-1000001-

and so on...

Most purists say on a numbers matching bike, the motor and frame should be within 400 digits of each other. I.E. #100100 - Frame, the Motor should fall between #100100 and #100400. The distance increased over the production time. My 1968 Z50 KO Slant Guard is frame #100988, motor #100992. The bike is 1 of the first 1000 built.

got pics? I'm not sure if I've seen your slant-guard yet. That's what I want more than any other bike (early Slant-guard). I've got three K0 frames, but no slant guards. The purists aren't going to be too pleased with me after they see my resto-moded '68s.

This is good to know

I was wondering why mine was off by a bit and why all the others I've seen haven't matched.

Frankly I think that even those guidelines can be off by more, because I know of a couple that were 100% original and the #'s were off by 4 figures

In the case of the KO, yes, a few unique things about the first 1,000. Taller handlebars, muffler bracket, 415 chain, not a 420, and the slanted muffler guard. The frame also has a brace welded over the backbone of it,under the tank, by the factory. Honda discovered the frame tube was too small and corrected the early ones with this fix.

In the case of a lot collector bikes, lower the serial number the better! One of my ZB50's is #421 off the line. My 1969 K1 Z50 is a Silver tag. Very early K1's, some say the first month of production, came through with black plastic brake levers, different tailight bracket mount and the frame tag was silver w/ black lettering instead of the typical black w/ silver lettering found on the later ones and K2's. The special part is where the frame # goes on the tag its BLANK! A rare Honda mistake off the line. (don't tell anyone ) The # is stamped on the rear of the frame but tag is blank. Go figure?
Well hope that helped you out!
