Sandblasting Cabinets - Anyone Built One?

I have one current CT70 project with another on the way, plus a Yamaha Chappy and Honda Express that I want to repaint one of these days. A sandblaster would really speed things up.

Anyone built their own sandblasting cabinet? I'm thinking of building one of these, unless there are better options out there? I need something that doesn't cost a fortune to ship to Alaska.

I have seen a couple built from refrigerators. They came out real nice and really cheap.

Oh, yeah.... Heads in the dishwasher get me in trouble, too.

I've had a Harbor Freight steel one for 15-20 years. Works fine. I re-caulked the seams, and have to replace the glass and gloves now and then. Tips, too, but they last a LOT longer, now that I've switched to using 13mm wristpins

Build Your Own Cabinet - Foot Pedal-Operated System - TP Tools & Equipment

I built one of these last year and I use it alot !!!

I didn't buy the plans that they sell .., I just built it to my spec. ..

I made a storage cabinet up top so it looks alittle different than that one , but it's close ..
I used one sheet of plywood to build it and I think I spent around 100 bucks give or take for everything ??

I'm use'n a hand held speed blaster for now and it works out pretty good for smaller parts .

For lighting ..., I'm use'n and old drop light . And for a vaccum system .., I'm use'n an old dirt devil vaccum cleaner pointed out the garage door and for the filter .., I'm use'n an old foam 50 pod filter .

I'll try to get pics for ya in the next couple of days if you need ??

I have one of their older 780 side loader cabinets and the vac 35 system for about 15 years now, really a good piece of equiptment. Building your own with their parts should be just as good

Re: Sandblasting Cabinets - Anyone Built One?

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'd think about the harbor freight unit, but shipping would kill me as I'm in Alaska. That's why the TP kit is so appealing. Plus I'll build the cabinet big enough for blasting a CT frame.

Pics and anymore info would be great! And let me know if there is anything to watch out for or do differently.

What do you guys prefer to use for blasting media when doing a CT frame and other parts?

Over the years I have slowly converted my vac to this one-
http://www.tptools.com/p/2324,15_Vac...um-System.html

and I have one of these now also-
Direct Mount Reclaimer - TP Tools & Equipment

so about once a year I pull it apart and clean it out. I should possibly do it more often but I dont use it commerically just for my hobbies

Re: Sandblasting Cabinets - Anyone Built One?

In your case doing a ct, I would use paint stripper 1st and then low pressure around 40lbs with glass beads. You don't want to warp the sheet metal. It will go faster that way. Honda didn't use a primer so the paint will come off fast
