Shifting kinda hard

Ok so first As my post count gives away I'm new to the z50 game...But I need some over the net diag. My 1996 z50r (stock 3spd auto) seems to be running great but shifts hard, now It shifts hard to me, but not sure if that's just how these bikes are or what. So with that limited info, I was thinking clutch?

Thanks

Bizzel

Re: Shifting kinda hard

When you said shift hard do you mean it's hard to shift from 1st to 2nd or that it lurches forward when you shift? If it lurches forward then you have to have to adjust your clutch or idle if it's happening from neutral to 1st. If it's hard to shift then it's most likely something bent like a shift shift, shift fork, or stopper plate.

Re: Shifting kinda hard

A clutch adjusted too tight can make it hard to shift from gear to gear also. The adjuster screw on the clutch cover, with the locknut around it, basically varies how much shifter travel and pressure it takes to override the centrifugal action of the clutch and disengage it to allow a shift. It can get outta shape to where the movement of the shifter doesn't disengage it completely, or at all, making shifts hard and notchy and jerky. Do you have a manual to refer to for the clutch adjustment procedure? There's a recent thread with a scanned-in section of the procedure and picture, etc. I'll look for it and try to link to it here in a minute. Sometimes you have to experiment with adjustments a bit outside of what the procedure recommends; the clutch can live like this.

You might in fact have other problems, shift forks and whatnot, but my bike's gotten into "stage II shift kit" territory before and I was able to tinker with the adjustment and get it working fine, and it's held up.

Sorry I was very vague. I larches. Its not hard to shift in any gear its very smooth it just larches from 1st to second and third. Ill have to give the adjustment a try.

Re: Shifting kinda hard

I think that's probably all it needs. I have an acquaintance with a Z/CT/SL/XR collection, and it seems like a lot of his bikes have the clutches adjusted pretty tight. They seemed to shift harder than I'm used to when I rode some of them awhile back. It made me wonder if he was one of those guys in high school that had a Camaro with a 2-barrel 305, air shocks, slapper bars and a real hard shift kit, who drove around trying to get as many shift-chirps as possible...
