Shock Length - Modded Z

I am in the process of building a Z for offroad and my final piece of the puzzle are the shocks. I Put the XR75 swingarm on it with BBR SP-5's up front. I plan on purchasing custom Works rear shocks, but would like to know some of the cons with going with longer shocks. At first glance I will need them to be atleast 14" long for the bike to sit level. I would like to add a little length on the shocks for when I sit on the bike it sits level. I would like to put 14.5 to 15" shocks on it if I could. The chain does not appear to be affected when I put the swingarm through the motion at that length. I am running a joker chain roller. Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks

Throw a pic up of your bike if you could, I would like to see what it looks like with that 75 swinger and forks.

Re: Shock Length - Modded Z

Start off with CT70 shocks and see where you want to go from there. you could always slide the forks up an inch or so in the triples. Are you going mono shock because you said you were having a custom shock made? Another option is always a Kitaco +4" swing arm for 280mm shocks which has the shock mounts moved in a bit so the shocks are more vertical. If you really wanted to spend some cash you could buy an over or g-craft swing arm with some daytona rear shocks. Both companies also sell mono-shock swing arms with the clamp on shock mount if you chose that path.

Probably looks similar to this.

PS: Mark, that 88 kit and ported head you sold me is working awesome. I had the smallest motor at a recent event but could still pull 125's and even a 150. Sure is better than the stock 50 motor that I used to have.

Re: Shock Length - Modded Z

Arlindsay, are those your bikes? Those SP-5's look longer than mine. Let me know if you can take a quick dimension of the length of them.

I am keeping the dual rear shocks, but want it to sit as high as possible. I will take some pictures this weekend. I am going to mock up the different height possibilities and see which one works best. It seems that no one really wants to go any longer than 13" on the rear shocks. I did see some people use old cr80 rear shocks on their Z, which I believe are longer than 13". Anything that I should keep an eye out for when mocking this up besides chain tension? I did notice the longer the shock is going to be the more the chain will ride on the chain slide I installed on the swingarm.

Man that built up Z looks great... is that a 75 swingarm on yours then or something else?

I am glad the 88 with the head work is working good for you

Correct. It's a late 70's XR75 swingarm.

Re: Shock Length - Modded Z

This is actually 1Live2Live's bike, but mine set up with the same front forks (SP-5's) and XR75 swing arm. It looks like his rear shocks are about 14" in length. I did a quick mock up and I may go to 15" or 15.5" on the rear shocks. I am going to assume the rear shocks will sag atleast 1" when I sit on it and will ride at a good level this way. What are your thoughts?
