| Smoking after rebuild
I had a motor built for my Z project. I have not got the motor yet, but the guy said when he test fired the motor it was smoking. He said it was probably because the rings were not seated yet. He already has 100 dollars of my money, should I believe his story and pay the rest. I have rebuilt a few motors my self and never had a smoking issue. Guess I should have done this one also. I guess my question is should I believe the ring story or not. |

depends on how long it smokes, maybe a little at first but then it should go away, if it dosnt then your rings were put in wrong

Z50 bottomend, totally gone through. CT70 topend. Bored cylinder, new piston, rings, etc. Head totally gone through. The rebuilder is no amatuer. He has done several of these motors. I know anyone can make mistakes.

It's also very easy to overlap the ends of the corrugated oil ring when installing the rest of the rings. If that happens, it lets oil seep up into the cylinder and be burned off. Not much else to do but remove the top end and realign the oil ring properly.

Nevermind. Talked to engine rebuilder. He has fixed the problem. Do not know how. Don't really care. Great guy to deal with. He did say he has done several engines for other PMers. Motor headed my way.

All I got for him was he tore topend off of the motor. Found oil in the cylinder. Rings had not seated. Used same head. Different cylinder and piston. Fired the motor. No smoke purred like a kitten. Stand up guy. I have not received motor yet. Very confident it will be excellent. That is all of the info I have.
