Stator Wrapping for Lights

Hello,
Looking to get some lights on my '84z with '00 XR50 motor in it (CDI). I have read a few how-to's and it seems pretty straight forward. One thing is I am unsure where to get the 18awg magnet wire from at a decent price. All the how-to's say they found it for around 9 buck. Radiosack doesnt sell 18awg so i have no idea where to go locally. I'm in Jersey. Anyone have any ideas where to find this stuff?

Thanks!

Re: Stator Wrapping for Lights

You can get the wire on ebay. That's where I got mines.... 400 feet for $30 or so.

Here's the link. BTW I have a lot left on this spool. If your only doing one I think 100ft would be enough.400' AWG 18 Copper Magnet Wire, Tesla Coil, Ham Radio - eBay (item 160294658914 end time Oct-30-08 09:25:03 PDT)

Re: Stator Wrapping for Lights

Thanks a lot. I heard that it takes about .5lb to do one. Not sure what that equals in feet though
Do you want to sell what you have left? About 300ft left?

Got a spool of 100ft from ebay for 16 shipped. (18 awg) Just wrapped one stator. should be enough for one more. Check ebay.

Sweet, found it and the guy is in my neck of the woods. Thanks a lot. So, 100ft should do 2 stators? That would be nice.

Wrapped mine the other day and tried wrapping a second. 100ft is not enough. You need an extra 25ft. If I would have known I would have picked up a larger spool.

Any idea on the output you're getting?

I did 67 turns and am getting about 103w. There might be room for 75-80 turns. Im guessing it could produce more watts.

How would I test it? I've got a multi-meter. But I have no idea what settings to use. I'd like to know myself.

Test off the 2 wires you sodered to your stator. Set your VOM to V~ ( I think thats the right one??)

Re: Stator Wrapping for Lights

Hey, can anyone post pix of their finished product? Want to make sure I do it right. Not 100% on where to attach the wires from the directions I have.
Thanks!

Will post pics tonight but if you soder both the magent wire and your colored jumpers to the little clips on the stator you will be ok. If you look at te wires that are already sodered on the stator, you will see others around it. Thats where you want to soder your wires.

Re: Stator Wrapping for Lights

Here is a pic from another website with some info I added. I heard some people have grounded to the bolt that holds the stator in place. not sure if you can or not (Idont see why you cant. The ground is to the motor which has no rubber motor mounts). Someone correct me if Im wrong. Your other option is to ground to the frame. </br>

Re: Stator Wrapping for Lights

1st, you don't need to unsolder any wires.. You can move it back while you wrap that arm(slack comes from the pulse generator, pull that in closer).
you don't need ground from stator. Just make sure your lights are grounded. 12v wire is all you need hanging out from your igniton cover. Route same as stock wires.
Its easy, until you get to about 20 turns then it starts to get tiring. Make sure to scrape the copper wire at the contact/soldering points and check for continuity between the two soldered points.

Re: Stator Wrapping for Lights

I was going to do this myself, but I ended up buying a brand new baja designs 110w stator setup on ebay for $41. I figured it wasn't worth the aggravation with what the spool will end up costing. I know there was someone else selling a Ricky Stator one on there as well for like $50 buy it now. Just figured I'd give a heads up in case anyone gets intimidated by the wrapping project. If I find that auction again I'll be sure to post up the item number.

Its really not that hard. There are plenty of "how to's" around. Im just not that electrically inclined. The wrapping part can get tirosome but for $50 you can get plenty of wire and wrap a few stators for your buddies. Just my 2 pesos worth... Hardest part for me is figuring out how to wire my headlight, tail light with brake switch.

Re: Stator Wrapping for Lights

I soldered the wire to the terminals closest to the ground strap. That's where the wire started then made all the wraps and used the other terminals to end the wrap and the other terminal to start the 12v wire to the harness.
