My Mood: | Steering stem bearing question...
On the older steering stems, is there something significant about them that doesn't allow the newer style bearings? I have a steering stem from some sl xl 70 forks. The stem measures longer than the one on my crf 50 forks. Is this for the older style bearings? Thanks everyone for your help

I believe the bearing races are the same size, just situated differently on the longer shaft. You might have to remove the SL/XL stem and have it turned down on a lathe to match the XR/CRF one, that way the stem will then fit on the XR/CRF style frame. You will need to thread the stem down further, as well, for the two steering stem nuts to work right.
