Steering stem bearing question...

On the older steering stems, is there something significant about them that doesn't allow the newer style bearings? I have a steering stem from some sl xl 70 forks. The stem measures longer than the one on my crf 50 forks. Is this for the older style bearings? Thanks everyone for your help

Re: Steering stem bearing question...

I believe the bearing races are the same size, just situated differently on the longer shaft. You might have to remove the SL/XL stem and have it turned down on a lathe to match the XR/CRF one, that way the stem will then fit on the XR/CRF style frame. You will need to thread the stem down further, as well, for the two steering stem nuts to work right.

Finally someone who talks some sense.... O hey by the way i love your avatar Ha ha. Anyways, i can put the sl70 stem through the crf 50 frame just fine. Are the Z50 bearings and races the same as the sl70 ones? Cuz i have a set of Z bearings. The only problem is i can't get the nut and race on top to come down far enough to tighten on the bearings. This is when i try to use the new style bearings....

Yes, the bearings and races are the same, 24mm ID for the lower bearing and 22.5mm for the top bearing.

Cuz i have a set of Z bearings. The only problem is i can't get the nut and race on top to come down far enough to tighten on the bearings. That is why you have to have the stem machined on a lathe, you have to cut the stem down further to allow the bearing to slide further down and fit correctly into the Z or XR/CRF frame neck. You will also have to extend the 22mm X 1.0 threads further down the stem so the two upper stem nuts will tighten up correctly.
I had to do this with an older XR100 steering stem to get it to fit in a Z50R frame neck.

This is when i try to use the new style bearings....
Good Luck...

Re: Steering stem bearing question...

No, because the Z/XR/CRF 50 steering stems have no base to them like the SL/XL 70 stems do.
