| steering stem bearings
Like a dope I tipped over my parts tray and I'm not sure if I lost any stem bearings. I searched the archives and can't find a count....I'm sure you all know....wanna spill the beans?? (bad pun)!!! Also, what's the best grease to use, auto whl brg grease?, white lithium in a tub??,Molybendenum?, Sil-Glyde;caliper slide grease (vaseline-like, but waterproof) Last edited by allmakesmx; 02-13-2008 at 05:14 PM. |

I have the ones that are in the cages and they have 19 in them.I don't know if that's how many there are when they are loose. You can check DRATV.I think they sell the loose ones.

I checked DRATV and it says for 1968-1987,42 required.I don't know what year your bike is.I bet the 1988-1999 use the caged ones though.

21 for the upper race, and 21 for the lower race. Better get your little magnet out, Josh... I use the Bel-Ray Waterproof grease. |

Caged - 19 top and bottom Loose - 21 top and bottom. Loose: suck, caged: better but still notch the races, tapered: good choice |

I have some spare bearings of the same size. If you can't find them, PM me and I'll ship them out to you if you cover shipping which should be like a dollar.

Remove the top clamp and tighten the funky upper stem nut. It's the one that looks like a castle turret. Make sure you have bearings in there first, or you'll flare the bottom of the steering neck. |

Make sure you adjust it so there is no slop but it is not notchy. It is a very precise adjustment which moves when you torque the cap nut to 50 ft/lbs. Cone bearings are a pain to adjust. When I re-do my BMX bearings, I have to adjust 6 cone bearings. It's a pain, but you get good at it.
