Re: Storing a new engine?

Put the normal amount of oil in the crankcase, then hold the motor and turn it upside down and lean it forward and back and left and right to make sure everything inside the motor has a nice coating of oil on it. After that pull the spark plug and put some motor oil or fogging oil in the cylinder. Not a lot just enough to cover everything. Then turn the motor over a couple times to spread it through the cylinder. Oil will drip out the exhaust port so don't do this over your carpet. Then leave the motor at TDC compression stroke just like you were adjusting valves. This ensures both valves are closed. Then wipe the oil drips from the exhaust, put the spark plug back it, and store it.

Re: Storing a new engine?

You can feel the compression going up the compression stroke, then after when the T mark lines up you can wiggle the flywheel back and forth easily. If you are not on the compression stroke, the piston will spin easy until the T mark lines up again and when you wiggle it back and forth it will have some resistance from the valves. This is how I check. Without understanding you may put it on valve overlap which is the opposite of what you want to do. If you want to be certain, just remove the round cam sprocket cover and line up the o with the notch in the head.
