Street legal guys!!! Whatcha running for oil coolers?

I'm FINALLY looking to upgrade the oil cooler set up on my streeter CRF (117cc)...

The bike currently runs top end in the mid 70mph range and can cruise comfortably at 55. But... I think the Kitaco cooler I'm running now just is not quite up to the task. Also, I plan on plumbing it off my Tak clutch cover and not a head plate...

What set up you guys are running on your street legal minis?

Re: Street legal guys!!! Whatcha running for oil coolers?

I run no oil cooler on my 85cc, but I don't go more than around 10 miles at a time. With my new motor I am going to need something for an oil cooler because I would like to ride for longer trips. How many miles are you guys going at a time?

I have one on my scoot with a computer fan hooked up to it keeps it cool. right now its just a 107 when I am cruising it stays pretty cool so I think it helps a little lets see some pics of your set up

Motoshop Z got me this 3 row, head mounted Takegawa oil cooler. I like it. Comes in your choice of blue or red.

...as well as gold. I run the same from MotoshopZ as well.

I am starting to research by engine type, to cool or not to cool.

back in old old old school PM a gentleman from this site did a test on his motor because he wanted to run two oil coolers but couldn't because two oil coolers made the motor to cold to run efficiently.. I think your talking out of your rump..

Can a combustion engine run to cold? I've never heard of that. I use to be in on some car racing an we would load ice into the 2 phase intercooler as well as ice the block down. If it n e thing it made it run better. I could maybe see a top end getting somewhat to cold but bottom i don't know. Or i could be a totall moron an am wrong all together.

cold air = great
cold engine = not so great.
engines need to run at a proper operating temperature.
That's why cars have a thermostat in coming from the radiator.
That's why trucks have covers over their grills on very cold days.

I use whatever fin-type one from an ATV or street bike that has the right size, shape, and price on the eBay. And a Lockhart thermostat.

engines become more efficient with higher temperatures. we keep temperatures low because materials can only withstand certain temperatures

idk why you would ice the bottom end, but you ice the intercooler to make the air colder so you can cram more air into the cylinder

Re: Street legal guys!!! Whatcha running for oil coolers?

Someone def posted a thread testing a oil coolers and proved there wasnt a difference in temps on a motor. Ill try and dig it up. They do look cool tho.

Here we go heres a quote: This one is for you BOB-boob hahaha

Because the oil coolers don't work as well as people think.

Let me explain.

The oil cooler is not cool because it is doing such a good job at cooling. The oil cooler is cool because it's doing a poor job at transfering heat from the oil. If the oil is not transfering its heat to the oil cooler at a very rapid rate then the cooler will remain a lower temperature.

I'm NOT saying oil coolers don't work at all. I am saying that your oil cooler being cool isn't proof they do. If anything it helps support the idea that they don't work very effectively. Go ride a CRF450 for the same time period then check the engine temp and the radiator temp. There will be a difference but not that big of a percentage.

Think of it this way... If you run 260 degree oil through type A pipe of 10 feet and it loses 3 degrees then the pipe will warm up a tad. If you run the same 260 degree oil through type B pipe of 10 feet and it loses 100 degrees then the pipe will now be considerably warmer. Which pipe did a better job at cooling the oil? Which pipe is hotter?
it has to do with heat transfer

PM Dicktony. He's got a new Takegawa 5 row supercooler he's getting ready to sell that will bolt on under the frame backbone behind the steerer tube if you have room.

Does your CRF50 still have the keyswitch bracket under the frame?

If it does, this is a cool way to mount an oil cooler:

is that a custom made piece or something we can buy aftermarket?
all that time i was using good old zip ties to hold the billet cooler when i could have done something like that
