Stripped Kickstart Shaft

The end of my kickstart shaft on my 82 z50r is stripped making the kickstart virtually useless. Anyone know of an easy way to attach this as I don't really want to go through the trouble of tearing down my engine and putting a new one in?

Weld it. But then if you ever need to open the right cover, out comes the hacksaw. When you have the cover off is when you should replace the shaft since your already 5% into the engine.

I don't know. I PMed FluentDesigns and he said he'd take care of it. It's crazy because all my posts are still everywhere.

that's what you meant to say, right qwokie...

you can try drilling through the kickstarter and the shaft all in one hole and put like a pin through it. that way itll jkick over and then when you need to service the bike just pop out the pin/bolt or whatever you decide to use. but it is so much more worth it to fix it right the first time. its not too hard if you just pay attention and ask any one on here for help if you need it.

ya splitting the case will hopefully never need to happen once i get this motor together so i guess I might as well weld it...I guess the only reason to split it now would most likely be to install a stroker crank and that shoodnt be for awhile hopefully

Maybe just buy a pair of vise grips and kick it over with the vise grips on the shaft. Should work.

when i stripped the splines on my shaft my grandpa and i drilled a hole between the shaft and the actual kicstarter and press fitted a pin in the middle of it, does this sound like ur situation at all?

If I stripped it, I'd be brave and split the cases. I'd wait until winter or something but I would replace it eventually. It's always better to replace brocken parts instead of fixing them.

And you know if qwokie endorses them, those vise grips are most certainly a top quality pair only Made in Japan, and not in China...

ya it does thats probly the best solution, saves splitting the cases plus its not permanent so i can still remove if i need to acess to the clutch or watever. I'm sure i can jimmy rig something up...as long as it turns the bike over its good enough for me

Or..... you could try push starting that whopping 50 cc Thumper into life, should be easy enough, many large racebikes are pushstarted around the world everyday.

....but I would drill through both the kickstart and spline and put a good hardened bolt through.

Replacing that kickshaft wouldn't be the hardest thing in the world... you will probably save yourself some frustration and a lot of cussing if you fix it right. Can you imagine cruising around and losing your ViseGrips and pushing your bike back to where ever?

you can just weld it on at the outter edge and then if you have to split the cases just grind the weld off and replace the shaft while you're in there.. i've done it on old 70's dirtbikes a few times and a 350 tripple kawi motor too

if you weld it, do it as quick as you can and splash it with water as soon as you finish or the heat might transfer into the seal and wreck it.
