switching from points to cdi

How hard is it to switch to a cdi crank on a z50r? What parts are nessasary for a complete swap and is there any noticable gain in performance?

It's easier to just swap over the whole motor. If you like the three down transmission, it's easier to just swap out the transmissions. It's all bolt on that way, no cutting fabbing.

You will have to remove a small portion on the left side engine case, to allow room for the 12V pickup to seat properly in place. You have to use a CRF/XR shift shaft, as the CRF/XR crank is 3/8" wider on the left side. You need the CRF/XR stator/flywheel assembly, and ignition cover. You will then be able to use any aftermarket BBK made for a CRF/XR50.

And the CDI ignition covers don't match up perfectly to the 6V cases. CDI cases have one more curve than the 6V cases. It's at the top. I'll try to find some pictures.

Okay, I found the pictures. The red part shows the curve of the cases and covers.

there are kits available that bolt straight on and use your standard flywheel. I fit one to my 78 z and it works great.

there is a guy from Malasia selling them on ebay. I was nervous the first time I bought one, but have now bought 2 with no problems. you just have to tell the guy what brand of flywheel your bike has.
Be warned though, the english in his fitting instructions is shocking.
