Takegawa 124 +R in a CT70 gear suggestions/Speed recommendation?

I got my 124 +r mounted today and got the jetting pretty close. I ended up at 22.5/190 with the needle one clip from the bottom. Idles perfect, revs out very cleanly.

I'm running a 17T front and a 32T rear with a 120/80-12 tire on the back (19" diameter" with a Honda Monkey 4-speed tranny, Mikuni VM26 carb, and A really nice Yoshi knockoff pipe. Running the stock s12 cam (for now). I don't think the VM26 carb is the best idea...I think a TM28 will be better. I will update that once the motor is broken in a bit.

I'm also running a +6 cm rear swinger.

Its tough to keep the front tire on the ground in 1st gear. Has a good ratio out to third and then 4th seems pretty tall. Haven't run it out to max speed yet since it is new.

What type of gearing do you suggest on this? I'd like to cruise at 60mph without taching it out but I also realize this motor wants to be twisted a bit. Seems to lug a but under 4000 rpm too.

Also, how fast are people going on the ct70? Seems it gets squirrely at higher speeds. I run my other ct70 at 55mph max and it is not squirrelly at that speed.

ive topped mine out at a blistering 42mph with a 34 year old topend. i got it going 48 down a hill once! I would love to have that motor in a ct!!! If i buy your 95 motor, im going to put a crank in it and then i will let you know how fast it is!

My CT can cruise @ 60 and I run 14/31(I think) but I have 10 inch wheels. I had a friend chase me in his car and I think it tops out about 65mph. I have a knock off 140cc engine and for $300 it's hard to beat! 60mph on a stock CT70 is kinda scary but not bad...

Well, my ct is not stock. I've got updated inverted forks, better rear shocks, etc. I want to cruise a real 60mph too, which means that I have to get either a tach or permanent mount for my gps.

I think I"m going to get a steering stabalizer too just to be safe.

Re: Takegawa 124 +R in a CT70 gear suggestions/Speed recommendation?

I think I'm running the same gearing as you. Any smaller on the rear and I think the chain would rub on my swinger. I know the front is 17t. I cruise at 40-50 and maxed the speedo(k1) is past straight down closer to the 10mph. 140cc with head work and carb and stock suspension/wheels and it still rides smooth. I haven't gps'd it since I've put it back together but I'm guessing it'll top out in the low 60's.
It keeps pulling at 40mph in 3rd but without a tach I'm not taking it any higher.

(not trying to thread steal)
Think this hurts the stock speedo?
The stock rims/hubs handle this speed?

Hit the link: Welcome to Honda50.com!

I think 17/32 for your combo is overgeared. These motors like to pull RPM's and you mechanically shouldn't be able to get that bike to redline in 4th.

Use the calculator and check the mechanical speeds.

Hey Dan,

How does that work then, mechanically how can you tell it wont pull the rev's??

Just trying for my takky 124cc, s-touring and super clutch, 120/70 10" wheel, running 16/31 at the moment, how does that look?? Used to run 17/32 on the same engine on the monkey for a while and it would not rev out in 5th..

Victor -

Let's think about this logically for a moment. In fatcaaat's scenerio, he's running a 17T 32 on 12" tires with a full Takegawa 124 +R.

At 11,500 rpm's, that's 92mph with a 17-32. The 124 doesn't go that fast. In theory, the bike is probably going to hit the low to mid 80's properly tuned which is going to be between 10,000-10,500 rpm's mechanically.

The +R with the bigger cams makes power in the high-rpm range so I'd think about dropping down to a 16T in the front to see how it affects top speed and keep the 32T in the rear.

If you have the tourning 5 speed with a .80 5th, this should be used as an overdrive, and not a gear for top end speed. You should use 4th for your top speed blasts and use 5th as a cruising gear.
