Tanks Rust

I have a tank with some light rust on the inside. Should I not even try to use this tank will rust make it's way into the combustion chamber and wreck the top end? is this even possible?

I am thinking of electrolysis rust removal but the thought of putting more water in a tank is a little worrisome. How would I get all the water out of there like every drop after the process?

I have put some fogging oil in there for now to stop further rusting.

Thanks
Mike

Re: Tanks Rust

If the bike's a rider, I'd do the old "put some nuts/bolts/washers in the tank with some kerosene or diesel and shake it around a lot for a long time" method. This knocks off the loose rust in there. Then you shake all the nuts/bolts/washers out, flush the loose rust out, and run a fuel filter in the line and don't worry about it. Helps to keep the fuel pretty full, so the internal splashing while riding keeps the inside coated with a nice non-rusting coat of hydrocarbons. You might have a more sanitary approach in mind, but if you just want it to ride and the rust isn't hideous, this should work for you.

But some people like those internal coating products. I've never used them myself.

(Actually, it works even better if you get your wife, kids or buddy to shake the tank, while you man the BBQ grill or take a nap or something. That's the hot setup, right there.)

Hmm my neighbors have kids that drive me insane maybe I should get them to shake the tank while thier mom and dad are trying to rest and relax.
