tapered bearings

Hey guys I recently purchased the following bearing for my CT70 and I was just wondering how exactly this worked. They are tapered bearings with a steel ring that they sit in.

I placed one on the top of the neck of my frame and it appears to sit high out of the top and the sleeve it goes into doesn't really sit down in.......

Any suggestions?

Please help.

Re: tapered bearings

My all Balls had to be threaded in with the steering nut which cracked and I replaced but seems better now. Good luck with yours!

I'm in the same boat... and I don't quite like how they fit. Does anyone have pics of their install?

Cheers,
Greg

G-
As the bearing are inside they would not look any different and a picture would show anything? There needs to be no slack in the head but not clamped closed.

Re: tapered bearings

We tried installing the all balls bearings on a CT70K0 last night. The bottom race goes up into the steering head about an 1/8th inch and looks nice. The top race cant be driven in far enough to get the bearing low enough. The problem is the top aluminum plate when installed on the steering stem lacks about an 1/8th inch from contact with the top of the fork tubes. is there a thinner bearing and race, or did you guys just torque the crap out of the bolts that go into the forks? I'm actually concerned that the casting will break, so I think we're going to put a flat washer on top of each fork tube.

Thoughts?

Re: tapered bearings

yeah when u tighten them up they will press in, i bought a 40$ tool designed for this for the klx 110's a a crafty looking wrench deff worth 40 bucks, im always replacing all my bikes with tapered bearings, and then wont sit right down in at first , tighten them up, not too much tho, you dont wanna no free/gravity-turn when the bikes in the air, ive tightened mine up too much before and have had to back it off a little, hope these work for ya man

Re: tapered bearings

I dont think there is any slack left to press in. The bottom race is seated in the head, not just flush, but actually 1/8 up in the head and bottomed. The top race absolutely is bottomed against the ledge in the head, and is flush with the top of the head. I didn't notice the top and bottom bearings have diff ID's, but the bottom bearing was a good fit, with only light tapping to drive it on.

Re: tapered bearings

do you have the washer and the grease seal installed at the bottom of the forks?
they slide over the stem then the bearing goes on

Re: tapered bearings

Yep, thin washer then seal, then bearing. From the looks of the above posts, it's just the way it is. Nothing will get the top race deeper in the head, and the bearing will only go as deep as the race is. It looks like washers on top of fork tubes is the way to go. Actually, the steering stem nut could be milled to lower the ledge the upper plate sits on, lowering it to meet the fork tubes. Any other ideas from those that agree the top bearing is too high?
