TB108 Race Head with Mikuni VM26 Jetting?

Alright...I have the motor in the bike running but it isn't all that crisp right now. Cant' do much more until I get the wheels back.

Anyone have a jetting spec for this setup? I currently have it at 17.5 pilot and 165 main. Seems like I should drop it to 15 pilot or so...but the thing seems to be running hot and the plug has no color to it at this point. Maybe it is lean?

How is it idling? Does it pop when you let off the gas at all? Tuning with no wheels can be hard.

Re: TB108 Race Head with Mikuni VM26 Jetting?

Probably lean. I run a 17.5 pilot and 185 main in the summer here in WA 70+ degrees. In the winter I run 20 pilot and 190 main. Needle in the middle on both setups. I'm about a 1/2 turn out on the air screw right now. Your elevation and temp will change those settings though.

Fat, you know a 26 is too big for the 108.

I don't think that a 26 is optimal for it for sure, but I figure that when I eventually wear the 52mm setup out, I'll go for a 54 which will then be 117...and ok for it.

It idles quite nicely but has a little bog off the bottom. Again...bike had no wheels on it so it may be deceiving.

Re: TB108 Race Head with Mikuni VM26 Jetting?

I am running the same setup, only I'm using an SE head. Right now, I'm running a 22.5 pilot and 165 on the main with clip at 4th position from the bottom.

What I'm finding is that the VM26 is a temperamental carb to say the least. I used to run one on my 124SE and it was just ok. But the midrange liked to act up on occasion, seemingly out of the blue, and top end power was lacking. I finally switched to a PE28 and never went back. It tunes so much easier than the VM26 and makes a LOT more power.

Re: TB108 Race Head with Mikuni VM26 Jetting?

After a little more research, I have come to the conclusion that my pilot is lean. I need a 20 or 22.5 in there. I'll swap that in there when I get my wheels back!

Yep, we run 22.5-25 in the Tak 106's, so it should be about the same for yours. I've been away from the computer for 14 hours, so I missed your PM (and 17 others...) Wheels will get blasted tomorrow night, shipped Tuesday. Been letting the decades of accumulation soak off them 56.6mm-bored cases

What do you run on the main/needle on the 106?

Swear to god the VM26 is the quirkiest carb I've ever used.

Re: TB108 Race Head with Mikuni VM26 Jetting?

i have the a 26mm on my 114 scoot motor doesnt have much of a bog off the bottom but when you like 3 quarters to full it starts to pop and bobble and will stop accelerating at about 55 60mph. Would this be to lean??? I just put the carb on to see how it would perform im not sure what size jets are in it right now. I'm gonna go take it apart and find out.

Fatcaaat did you get your wheels and how is it running now?

Re: TB108 Race Head with Mikuni VM26 Jetting?

Well i took it apart and i have a 165 main and a 22.5 pilot. Still cant figure out the popping part. Im thinking it could be the cam that is in it and possibly valve float, it has tons of tons of duration so it could be that I am not sure any opinions?

Re: TB108 Race Head with Mikuni VM26 Jetting?

To help trouble shooting, pops on accel would normally be timing or valve float, pops on decel and the bike is lean. Small pops when at a constant speed is normally rich. Every bike is different though. Make sure to tune pilot / idle before anything or symptoms tend to be very different and tuning is very difficult.

Re: TB108 Race Head with Mikuni VM26 Jetting?

I never could get that carb to run right on my TB117 either. Real quirky in the mid. Ended up puting a 24 Mikuni flatslide on adjusted the idle and is the best running carb/motor I've ridden: spot on everywhere right out of the box. Feels like alot more power too especially up top. But I'm no carb tuning expert either.

The thing that is weird the air fuel screw is all the way in. If i turn it out the idle goes up and it prrs like i kitten but then will bog when i snap the throttle. all the way in if you snap the throttle it doesnt bog out. I had it adjusted properly 1 and a half out and it still bobbled like a mofo up top. Maybe i should just be satisfied with it i mean i can hit 70mph lol.

Turns out that is still lean. I did some plug chops and now I am at 17.5/200 and it seems to like it there quite nicely.

It's fine for the street.

I've run a 17.5, 165, needle in the middle on a 108 (old head) with mild porting with great success.

That VM26 is super easy to tune, what u guys talkin' bout Willis!
