The top end rebuild (TERB)

Well I have found that my ehaust valves is bent. So I am buying a used head with the valves from a PM member. I am also ordering from DrATV:
-HD valve springs
-a top end gaket set
-valve spring compressor tool
-new IRC tire

Today I couldn't progress any further so I decided to organize the TERB. I took the engine out of the frame and tied it down to a workbench so I don't hurt by back from leaning forward so long. It's really secure because I tied it down and then screwed the workbench apart so it pulls the rope tight. All the parts are clean and orgainzed and I can begin work when I order the parts and/or get some spraypaint.

Tied down.

Taken apart

Engine parts.

Various parts.

A few nuts and bolts.

More parts.

And some more.

Not really. It's fun but riding is more fun.

Any idea on what caused the bent exhaust valve?

Someone said the valve clearace is 0.003 on CRF50s and I had it on 0.002 because that is the Z50R setting. That would puch the valve down further and make it potentially hit the piston.

And the valves were probably foating also because I was running the stock springs with the high lift cam.

I think it was more along the lines of valve float that caused the bent valve, rather than the valve being ushed 0.02mm more.

Yeah. Most people don't believe what I claim to do. They say oh that's cool and then I say I'm 14 and they doubt me. Not on forums but like when I talk in person.

I'll second that, those stock valvetrain components aren't meant to take a sustained high RPM range, full throttle, for miles at a time. A modified engine with bigger displacement is a different story, they have the ability to be geared tall enough for sustained highway travel (ala fatcaaat or reynolds_brad style).

I'm in the process of buying a 2005 head with valves so that I can put in the HD valve springs and have nice valves that were broken in with the head. If I got new valves for my current head, I'd have to lap them and the valve set is like $60 from http://www.bikebandit.com/.

This is the current state of my TERB. I'm waiting on my dad to order some parts for me.

I did but we sold it and I got to keep half the profit. That money is going into this TERB.

I managed to make my own high compression piston. I took a 1984 Z50R piston and ground down enough with a dremel to make it fit with a CRF50 head and TBQ cam. I know it will not bash inot the valves because I checked it without the base gasket and a used head gasket. If I had used a new head gasket, there would be more room than a torqued down one because it wasn't compressed. So when I put in a base gasket, then there will be even more piston to valve clearance. So I will test it with an old head before I put on a good one. (just in case I'm wrong about it fitting)
