Question top end tear down

if you guys would
took the head off of the k2 today the valves especially the exhaust is pretty well covered with carbon ,im thinking that its hanging open. last week i did a compression test it was at 45lb per kick, did one again the other day cause the engine wouldnt start the guage barely moved after about five kicks . the engine did smoke a bit more than i liked i figured it was the rings is this true ? im going to clean the inside of the head per clymer manual check for wear? if i can figure out what that is . the piston has a very slight amount of play when tdc does that mean the rings should be replaced also
thanks

Re: top end tear down

If you are taking it apart, you might as well replace the piston and rings. dratv sells the std size kit for 20.00. The valves in my 70 k1 were all carboned up too and didnt look like they were sealing either, so I dont think that is out of the realm of possibility. Smoke usually means rings, so just do a top end overhaul. I am sure you could get the valves done pretty reasonbly at a shop if you have it all apart already. Or you could get some lapping compound and do it your self.

Re: top end tear down

Replace rings, hone cylinder, replace valve seal, lap the vavles, and remove carbon from the head and piston. This will basically give you a brand new motor. The parts can probably be bought for ~$30 from DrATV.

Re: top end tear down

i got the head off cleaned and dunked it in cleaner valve tappet has a spot worn in the center cant feel it but you can see it need to get a valve spring compressor tool to get the valves out looking for one now not cheap! there are slight scratches in the cylinder wall if i hone the cylinder what size rings would i have to get? guess i"ll have to find a honing kit also. i do want to find out what my abilities are with the engine. lapping coumpound does that reseat the valves

Re: top end tear down

1.run engine to normal temp kill it
2. completely open choke open throttle all the way
3.put in guage
4. kick a couple times
5. record for future comparison
