My Mood: | vin # and title dilema
I sent off for a title for my 73 z50 the problem is I letf out the last # on the paperwork for ITS. So here is my dilema: Should I JBweld over the last digit and have the #s on the plate match the paperwork or I could sell the title to recoupe some of the costs and get another title with the right #s? Or I could just keep the title and xfer then #s to some other frame in the future.

Well, if you can register it just do that. I will have to go outside and count on my 73 frame how many digits there are. If you Jb over it than you are one short. If you ever get pulled over tell the cop that it was a mistake. If all digits match except last one then he will know it is the truth. Either way kind of a tough spot. Good luck. -D

All the numbers are fine. The vin on the frame ends in 222 but my title ends in 22 (short one "2") Its titled as a dirt bike which is no big deal in AZ as off road bikes can be made street legal with lights, horn, and a mirror. I may try going back to the DMV to see if they will correct it otherwise I might just cover up the last # on the frame.

Why not just go down to the DMV and register it and tell them that the title was somehowe screwed up. Most reasonable people, when they reissue the title in your name and state from ITS will make the correction without even thinking about if if you are nice and pleasant.

I've titled several CT70's at the Arizona DMV. All you have to do is take the bike there for an inspection. The inspector will write down the correct VIN and then you can go inside and get a title with the correct VIN. As long as the inspector verifies the number, you shouldn't have any problems. It should cost you $4 for a new(revised) title.

By the way, in Arizona, you don't have to send off for a title. Just take the bike to the DMV for a bonded title inspection. Once the inspection is done, go inside and they will run a VIN check on the bike and set a bond. Take that bond to your insurance agent and get a surety bond. Bring the surety bond back to the DMV and they will give you a title. The title costs $4 and a surety bond from State Farm cost's $50.

I like using ITS because for $80 there is no hassle. At least that is the cost on a CT70 of vintage 75 and older. You can go the bonded title route, but then you have to take into account your time. DMV in virgina takes about 2 hours to get through. I'd rather pay the extra 25 bucks and just do ITS...then I can go dmv to the title line and scoot right through.

I'd strongly recommend letting the error remain on paper, rather than on your bike's headstock. Easier to explain by far. If you run into hassles at the DMV I'd bite the bullet and reapply to ITS, explain what happened and if you have to, pay the fee and do it again with the correct number this time. Hopefully the DMV people will be able to work with you, though. |
