What year engine '91 or '92??

I was going to upgrade the cam in my 50, and on dratv, there are 2 kinds, and the years separate at 91 and 92.

My bike was made in 9/91, but is stickered a 1992.

What year is it? I really dont wanna have to send any parts back, or reorder anything.

Thanks much - Dave

Go by the model year which is 92. That is the model run it is. even though it was made in 91. Just like how they are already selling 08 cars. Bikes are like that too. So get parts for the 92.

if a vehicle is manufactured on or after august of a certain year say 08/07 for a build date ..then it is an 08 model year car/bike

that's pretty much the rule but there are exceptions

I'd say to pull the cam sprocket cover off, and see if your cam sprocket is held in place with 2 or 3 bolts. If it has 3 bolts, it is a '91 with a journal bearing cam; if it has 2 bolts, it is a '92 with a ball bearing cam.

Are you sure 91 Z's had journal cams? I think they changed over to ball bearings and 12V CDI in 1988. I know that they had 12V CDI. But I never disassembled the motor on my 88 Z.

I'm 99.9% positive on that, Qwokie. The Z50R from '82 to '91 used Part #14101-GB2-000 for the cam, and Part #14100-GK4-760 covers the Z50R from '92-'99, the XR50 from '00-'03, and the CRF50 from '04 to present.

Qwokie..... Tim is right, another fact.
The 1988 Honda ZB50 motor uses a ball bearing camshaft and cdi.
