My state requires no faster than 30, no more than 3 hp, automatic transmission and then it's considered a "motorized bicycle." I sort of fit into that and have not been hassled. But I worry about big-hatted drivers of fast-moving shiny straight-piped 1-ton dually diesel pickups coming up on me at 80 from behind. I got a title for mine finally and if I ever get around to adding more speed I might go for a proper plate, but for now I'm flying a homemade "49cc no license required" plate.

You do? I thought you had lightless Z50Rs and a DS80 or 100 or something.

I got a couple Z50R's, a DS80, and a YSR50. The YSR and one of the Z's are street legal.

Hawaii peeps prefer to have it registered with a permanent "bicycle/moped" title to avoid the yearly additional costs and hassles. Hawaii moped laws require no more than 2hp, nor any shifting. The Z50 is definately not a moped. Two stroke mopeds here are very popular, and it is common to find 90-100+ mph mopeds here. The Honda DIO and Yamaha JOG rules the street on small engines. Even BUDLIGHT made one of their commercials based on the moped builders here on island, haha. http://www.allowe.com/Humor/audioRMOG.htm **Search for moped. I also like the YSR50. I have three: (2) street legal titled YSR50s, and (1) YSR50 that is registered as a moped

How do you register them as a moped when there's a 2hp cap and a no-shift requirement? Buy the DMV person a case of frosties and slip it around back?

I've got one, but it's not totally put together yet. The frame is titled and plated though.

Re: Titled as Moped, depending on your luck, a bike can slip through as a moped based on cc. Once you have the paperwork and permanent "City and County of Honolulu Moped" decal you are good to go for the life of the bike. Cops are pretty laxed here regarding enforcement of moped laws so you will see guys flying around @ 65 mph on little mopeds. Pinned at 20 mph, my Z50A fits the moped profile, haha. My Z50A has been legally titled in Hawaii as a moped. I have permanent moped registration so I very happy about that.

"Pinned at 20 mph, my Z50A fits the moped profile, haha. My Z50A has been legally titled in Hawaii as a moped." Any time you want to post up a photo of you riding that thing flat out at 23 mph, palm trees and other visual cues in the background somewhere, grinning like an idiot and flipping the camera off ("Planet Minis is #1!") you just go right ahead. That will become my wintertime desktop wallpaper on the computer immediately. |
