z 50 motor troubles

So yesterday i was out messing around and run into an old man with a trailer full of scrap metal he was taking to the junkyard. I started to look the trailer over and saw a 79 z50 in there. I ended up talking him out of the z for $50!
I got it home changed the oil, cleaned the filter, drain and refilled the gas, cleaned the carb, and adjusted the valves and it fired right up. But now comes my problem it revs wide open as if the slide was in the carb backwards but i know for sure that not it. I cant figure it out and thought i could get some help on here. Here is a quick pic of it and the other z roller the motor will prob go on when i get it running good. Hopefully some one can help me out.

$50 dollar Z

and here is the roller its goin on.

not enough slack on the throttle cable?
and you might have to clean the carb out a little more

The throttle cable is good and loose, the carb was cleaned, i also wondered if i could use a stock 06 crf carb on it or would it be way off on jetting?

CRF carburetor works. I like to use CRF50 carburetors because they aren't 20-30 years old and generally work better. Also the mounting threads don't strip out.

Look like stock CRF50 shocks. That's going to be really stiff.

Intake air leaks ?

I recently had a car start to run away on me cause I left a huge vaccum leak going into the manifold .

Re: z 50 motor troubles

well i couldnt wait on the gasket kit so i rounded up a couple of gaskets i had laying around and put my crf stock carb on it, cleaned alot of the carbon out of the exhaust and put a cam cover gasket and intake gasket on it. It fired right up 2nd kick and purred like a kitten, but smoked like a frieght train. I guess i will be ordering a rebuild kit now. But thanks for the help and when i get it done ill post up some pics.

Re: z 50 motor troubles

All you need is rings and a flex hone. Replace the valve seals to be safe and you're all set.

Re: z 50 motor troubles

Flex hone. See link. Valve seals require a valve spring compressor. The parts are so cheap you'll probably end up paying more for tools. If you don't want to do that you could spend a little more and just get a bore kit. More power and all new parts.

Flex Hone:
1-1/2" LIFTER BORE FLEX-HONE

Piston kit:
STANDARD PISTON KIT ALL_Z50A'S (100019)

Top end gasket set with seals:
TOP END GASKETS ** PICK BORE SIZE ** 39 47 51 52 MM

Valve spring compressor.
VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR 50 AND 70 STYLE HEADS ONLY

Or just buy the 88 kit and a valve spring compressor to assemble.
