Don't believe we got any 4-speed 50s in the US, Z or otherwise. I think for us the 4-speeds were just CT70Hs, SL/CL/XL70s and later ATC70s, and C70 passports in some years. I believe there were some 5-speed hi-revvin 50s in the UK market in some quasi-sport-moped thing called an SS50, which looked sort of like our CL70. There may have been 4-speed versions too. I've heard the 5-speed was a gear crunch waiting to happen and the 3 or 4 speeds were much stronger. But this is based on reading other people's build stories and experiences on the internet. My own experience is that there are a bunch of 3-speeds out there that still work, and every once in awhile you run across a 4-speed with manual clutch, and they're a little more sporting feeling and those motors cost more on Craigslist and Ebay. |

yea ive never heard of a 4speed z motor but that doesnt mean it doesnt exist since im new to this. but ther are the ct70h motors that are 4 speed and more desirable than regular 3 speed. i think they were only made for one or a few years so thers much less of them

I put a 4speed Icon50 motor in my 87Z. It has been in there for three years now with zero problems.

The Majority of the Honda Monkeys out of Japan after 1978 were 50cc 4 speed manual clutch engines and are virtually the same engine as the Z50. Read up: Honda Z50 & Monkey Bikes Original Models Gallery I've converted all my Z50's to 4 speeds using JDM Honda Monkey gearboxes. |

Here in the UK theres lots of 4 speed honda engines with Manual clutches, My 1993 z50j has a 4 speed box but the 1969 z50a, 1978 z50j & 1981 z50r all came with 3 speed semi auto. I used to have an SS50 & the 5 speed did crunch quickly due to the gearing being thinner to fit in the cases, the 4 speed was ok.

The Z50AK2 makes a great bike for the conversion with the redundant rear foot brake-just convert the left steering tube perch to a clutch lever and your good to go. I have a cl70 scrambler in mine that's warmed up and it cruises at 45-55.
