My Mood: | Z50, k1, top end basic question
I'm in a resto project. The bike didn't run, but for five seconds, when I found it. I'm pretty much done with the painting and replacing parts and now have come to the engine. The motor had spark and compression at 60 lbs so I put a little oil in the head and the compression jumped to 120 - 130 lbs. My experience tells me rings, piston and cylinder. It looks fairly simple, but I'm a two stroke guy.... How difficult would it be to replace the cam chain and compenents while I'm at it? I understand the retiming but I'm not clear on if I need to crack the cases to replace the chain. Or is it as simple as pulling the flywheel? .......and do you reccommend replacing the cam chain as preventive maintainence goes?

not being as knowlegable about these minis as it seems like everyone else on this site is, but I would say preventative measures would be a good thing after all the k1 is like 40 years old and metalurgy has greatly improved since then, sure the cam chain may look good but after 40 years of use...................

Thanks for the quick post. I agree that it should be done.....unless it means splitting the cases. That would be another level for me and a whole lot of time..... I'm suspecting that its possible without that much trouble and hope someone can confirm. I have a Clymer for the thing, but it wasn't real clear to me. Thanks again.

No need to split the cases to replace the cam chain. Pull the flywheel and stator plate and you're there. May want to inspect the idler wheel while you're at it...Pretty old rubber in there.

yeah for stockers or light builds it's all the topend for 88 kits and the likes you will need a better clutch from what i've been reading around here. i just throw in entire big mill engines. also there should be some PDFs of the shop manuals that helped me out but i think the clymers has all that info.

Thanks for the replies. I think I understand it now. FastMC - is the idler that you are referring to the cam roller guide? If so, I plan on picking up a chain along with the roller compenents for the complete job. i.e. HONDA SS50 CT70 DAX50 Z50 SL70 CHAIN CAM REBUID KIT :eBay Motors (item 400055876425 end time Jul-14-09 08:30:01 PDT) Thanks again. I will post some photos soon, but nothing nearly as spectacular as what I've seen already on this site. The funny part is that I probably spent three times more in NOS than I originally planned. I think it will be another 40 years before this thing pays for itself; nonetheless my kids are having some fun. |
