Z50, k1, wheel bearings, seal, rear hub

I was going to replace the rear wheel bearings and grease seal today. I thought it would be pretty straight forward but now I'm more confused than ever. The vendor sent me a "kit" but it had three bearings (two are the same size and the third is larger). Also included is the grease seal.

I'm scratching my head because 1) I believe there are only two actual bearings to be replace and don't what that third one is for. 2) the grease seal looks way too large diameter to fit into the hub. The hub was in horrible shape from someone using a makeshift collar. When I removed what I thought was the original grease seal, it came out in pieces of rubber, but the more I look at this, I'm wondering if the grease seal was a metal ring covered by the rubber - and I'm actually looking at the ring still stuck inside the hub. It appears welded from time and dirt....

Anyone have any tricks of the trade besides the Clymer "use a soft drift"?

Just to conclude - I was able to remove the bearings. The grease seal was so torn up that it didn't have much rubber showing and I didn't realize that it was a metal band. Nonetheless, I took all of my frustrations out on the that rear hub until the seal and bearings simply fell out with 40 years of crap.

Re: Z50, k1, wheel bearings, seal, rear hub

First post here and working through my first resto, a K2. So, take this with a grain of salt. The rear wheel has 2 different bearings and the front 1. That's why you got 3. There is a seal for both front and rear. Here is a view of the rear. Hope it helps.

LOL - why didn't I think of that?? I just assumed I had ordered a set for one wheel. But there was only one seal in the package. Nonetheless, I got it apart and back together with the new bearings and seal. Thanks for the reply!

Good to hear yadihonda. The only reason that I knew is that I was just looking at that diagram this morning. My bearings don't look/feel in that bad of shape, but thought that I'd replace them anyway, the rest of the bike is such a basket case. I can't imagine that they had any love. Going to get some now
