z50 monoshock conversion,

I found this bike on 50 riders and just wondering if anyone knows whos it is or knows anything about it,

im looking to do a very similar conversion to my z50r but with less of an angle on the swingarm,

i was thinking along the lines of a aluminium A style swing arm and a stock xr/crf50 shock, apparently the xr/crf standard shock has a shorter eye to eye length than most thumpstar styled ones, is this true? and if so does anyone know the length of the stock shock,

any help or guidelines would be greatly appreciated,

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

Looks nice, But you would probably want to support the subframe a bit more. Maybe weld a couple bars around the shock because the main subframe brace bar thing was taken out so the shock would fit.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

Oh. Whoops. I just saw that the bike in that picture is reinforced where I said it should be. I just didn't see it the first time.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

What parts do you use all CRF 50 stocker parts. I like it and would consider the same conversion.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

well i have plans on using a +2 or +3 swing arm and a descent shock that doesnt make the swingarm angle as severe as that one,

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

I guess this could be done pretty cheap then. Using all CRF parts,my only question would be in the lenght of a stock CRF swingarm compared to a stock Z? Could I use a stock CRF shock? Would you need a new axle and spacers?

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

The CRF swingarm will bolt to your Z/R frame perfect at the pivot. You will need to make a top shock mount on the Z/R frame to utilize the CRF shock. The Z/R wheel will bolt into the CRF swingarm and work fine. You will not need a new axle or spacers. This is a bike that isn't mine but it's proof that the Z/R wheels fit in the CRF swingarm.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

Thanks Arlindsay, Thats exactly what I had in mind. Where else can I find more pictures of this kind of conversion. It seems to be a popular choice and one I will probably do this winter. That bike also looks to have the CRF style rear sub frame, or that is a newer style CRF with Z front end and tires

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

That pic is a newer XR/CRF50 frame and swingarm with a complete Z50R front fork assembly. As qwokie said, you can use the 8" Z50R wheels as long as you use the stock-style tires, or street tires comparable in size. If you want to use Sno-Hawgs, you will have to use an XR/CRF70 swingarm for the added tire clearance necessary.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

OK Thanks a lot. Would I still have the clearance issues with the swing arm hitting the sub frame?

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

also you will need a longer spacer/bunch of washers to fit the Z wheel in there, its a little too skinny

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

Ok I've been gathering some info on this conversion and have been told a few different things. One being that it wont work and I will have clearance issues and I will mess the geometry of the bike all up. I also have been told I need xr/crf 70 parts. What I am getting is an 84 Z with an 88 kit and big gun exhaust with all stock suspension and snow hog tires(the boy likes them?). I want to put a single Xr /CRF style swing arm on. What is the size diff between 50 and 70 swing arms and shocks. Will I need to put plus 1" fork legs to even it out. The only problem I have with the plus 1's are they all come with stiff springs and I am building this bike for my son(7 and 55lbs max) and I don't want the suspension to stiff. Also does any one have any pics of this done to a Z frame thats finished. I know its been done a lot and there has to be some pics out there. Thanks

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

Yeah. That picture is a CRF50 with Z50R wheels and front forks. But the CRF50 swingarm will bolt to the Z50R frame just fine at the pivot. You just need to work out a top shock mount on the Z50R frame.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

Here is a general picture of what would have to be done. You will need to cut out the diagonal brace for the frame on your Z to make room for the shock. Then if any serious riding is going to be done, you might want to consider bracing the frame around the shock since the diagonal bar is gone now. I don't know what swingarm this is in the picture, but it may help you out.

This is a picture of a finished Z50R with CRF50 suspension. So it can be done. And the Z50R wheel and tire will fit in the CRF50 swingarm. You just can't choose a tire that is too tall but the stock one will work fine.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

back in like 2001 or so at the GNC national at mosier valley, some kid had a z50 with real upsidedown forks, and a big bike-style shock/swingarm setup. i would give a testicle to know what components they used to build it.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

That swing arm looks like its at quite an angle. I wonder how they handle when done this way. Is it any better of a set up than the original Z's.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

I don't know, I just found the picture. You could probably get it to a better looking angle with a shorter shock.

Re: z50 monoshock conversion,

Thanks man the pictures help a lot and I am begining to get an idea of what I want to do. I am thinking XR 70 swinger(reworked to correct swing arm angle and interference) and 50 shock. I need to get some measurements so tomorrow I will go to the Honda shop with my tape. When I get the bike and go to work I'll let you know and post some pics. Thanks Anthony. Any more info on this would be great, keep it coming.
