| Z50A Steering Head Taper Bearings
There are all kinds of taper bearing sets on Ebay etc. The cost of shipping is always hilarious, especially for Canadians. The quality of the part is most likely suspect. As most of us already know, bearings are readily available from most industrial suppliers (Yes, even in Canada). So I ask; Could someone please measure the appropriate taper bearings for the steering head in a Z50A? Generally the # of the bearing is on the races / cup and cone which would be of tremendous help as well. Thanks again, Rob. |

| Re: Z50A Steering Head Taper Bearings That'd be greatly appreciated. This is something that the entire forum can benefit from; Get the sizes (or the #s on the bearing races) and I'll get a number from SKF so we can all enjoy quality bearing sets for 1/2 price!

I'll check a set that I have here, as well. If I can't get a number, I can get the dimensions and go from there. I do know the I.D. of the lower bearing is 24mm and the I.D. of the upper bearing is 22.5mm.

I have some questions, which parts on the drawing will the bearings replace and is the stack-up height the same? If the stack-up height is not the same how do you deal with it? Thanks David Last edited by RSAmerica; 03-13-2009 at 09:02 AM. |

I've never replaced the steering stem neck bearings on a hardtail frame before, but, in the pic below, the parts left would be all you would need to reinstall the tapered bearings, once you've removed the old outer races, and installed the new ones. If that isn't correct, someone from here who has done it on a hardtail frame will speak up, I'm sure. |

On m y ct 70 I had to cut the flange off of the lock nut with dust cover. Basically had to remove the dust cover completely. That is with after market triple tree though.

Was your Thai stem toos short to run the dust cover? Are you sure the races are seated correctly? That doesn't seem right to me at all. | |
