That's who did it!

You can tell some mass is gone just starting it.

Re: KLX110 lightened flywheel pics.

by taking material off the flywheel does it affect its magnetism and do you use a lathe or special set up, never seen anything special to do it thats why i ask

Re: KLX110 lightened flywheel pics.

pro's are the bike revs quiker, cons are easier to stall and harder to start.
personally i like a heavier flywheight, it all depends on your riding style.

Pros: Less rotational mass so in theory the motor will "spin up" faster, send you down the road quicker.

Cons: Small loss of bottom end if you like to lug it.

Much milder than an inner rotor ignition that can make the motor feel like it is "on or off". Not as prone to stalling as an IRK either.

Wont you also loose a little top speed right near the end of the power range, especcialy if you run tall gearing?

Re: KLX110 lightened flywheel pics.

Probably not.

In basic theory, you'll gain speed by allowing the motor to spin faster.

At 12,000 RPM weight, in ANY form, is not your friend.

But just because you lighten your spinning/recripocating parts doesn't neccessarily translate to more speed (either motor or wheel).

Most of the advantages of this mod are in engine acceleration (however it's spelled).

FMF 4.1 and a better air cleaner since last time (plus the flywheel), also a tad shorter gearing maybe, like 4% shorter.

Might pickup a fresh can of that VP U4.2 crack!!

The good stuff is still in the box: hicomp piston, Cat 5 ported head w/ Takegawa K10 cam, 4spd and Takegawa CR 4spd tranny. Maybe by the last race.

It has taken us all year to get this bike dialed but I think it's a damn good running stock bore machine. Need that 4spd bad!!!!

Re: KLX110 lightened flywheel pics.

Race report.

Well the bike ran great with the new flywheel. We didn't have ideal gearing for the track so it was lug it in 3rd or rev the crap out of it in 2nd, we chose 2nd.

Never seen the bike turn so many rpms, don't know if we hit the "rev limiter" or floated the valves but something was going on the far side of 10,000 rpm!

You could tell some weight was off kicking the bike over, and it lost a little bottom end starting off for sure, but once rolling it revved much quicker. Much more noticible than my 50 with the cut flywheel.

Great modification!! Poor man's IRK!!

On a separate note I think one of the essential mods for a KLX is the 4th gear drum and Takegawa CR tranny, if we would of had that it would have been a whole different race.

Re: KLX110 lightened flywheel pics.

You can get more than 7oz or so off but most of that weight above that is taken from so close to the center that it doesnt effect the inertia (which and what makes your motor rev slower or faster) as much as on the very outer dia.

And from a time to gain stand point really doesnt give you enough of a gain.

But I know someone will come on here and say im wrong.... so for them, If you are trying to get every last 0.0000000001 of a hp out of your motor then you MUST do it.

And pretty much on the 110 there are NO cons to lightening the f/w.

Tonight i turned a stock klx110 flywheel down on my lathe... looks similiar to yours, Gotta weigh it tomorrow and see how much i got off it. Im ready to see if there is any difference when we try it out.
