| Porting a +R head or moving to something else
Hi there people, I have 2 KLX motors with: - Take 138 + R - 55mm stroker - VM26 (one Take / one Kitaco) I was wondering if porting was really needed for these motors, or if the gain on a 150cc will not be too noticeable? My second option was to build a Kitaco 143 4Valve (we are limited to 150cc on the french championship so I can t go 160cc). The only thing is nobody in France runs the motor so I have absolutly no feedback. Is anyone running a Kitaco 4Valve on this forum? How does it perform against a 150+R? Thx, Ben |

I also would like to know what type of porting could be needed for the +R head? Would you only redo the intake and match it to the boot and redo exhaust too?

well i guess it all depends if you want to spend a few hundred in porting or $1500 on a new motor kit and have to split the cases again to take out the stroker crank.

i have had a couple +R heads, 1 not ported 1 ported by mike castro. if the right person ports it it's definately worth it. i have rode dereks 160 4V and it does rip, it was better than my 194+R. but it uses valve shims instead of tappet screws and needs adjusted frequently. if i was a serious racer i would want the 4V, but since i'm old and slow i downgraded to a 138+R (with porting)

On almost all heads there's room for improvment. Our built TB155 with there new V2 head/Ported compared to Derek 4V head, the torque on the TB155 is only 0.3 ftlbs of torque away from Dereks torque specs on his 160 motor with the 4V head. I going to try an other cam to see if we can match or beat those torque numbers. Because of the two different cam specs, Dereks 4V peak torque is between 7,700-8,700 rpms our TB 2V peak torque is at 6,700-7,700.(Both are ported) The answer to your question is, Yes porting helps. Gene, What kinda torque numbers are you looking at?Im at 11.19 on a bolted together 172+R with the S20 cam.Just curious how it compares. |

If your question is "are you going to gain horsepower by just porting the R head"? No. It's all in combinations, pipe, carb, cam, gas, ect.... We have been porting bikes for over 18 years there was a guy on here that everyone said how good his porting was, so I sent some up to him and with the combination we run I lost horsepower.
