My Mood: | Shock spring rate question
In process of a motard build and have some questions about rear shock spring rates. I see different rates like 1000 and 1200 (is it kgs?). Anyhow my build is a medina sx160 chassis that will have a Z155 and I weigh 210 an am 6'1" tall. I'll be running 12" tires with TT92's. is a stiifer spring in the 1200 range better for my weight and combo? Any suggestions? Forks are Pitster x4 I think. I plan on a fork oil change to 15 wt. Sound smart? My last motard mini was CRF50 based with an i-shock and upgraded stock front so Im looking for a good baseline and a good place to start. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and help!! |

I'm not sure about the spring rate I would go with the 1200 and I'm retty sure it is measured in lbs. As far as the fork oil I use 30 wt. but I have heard of someone using 80wt. and the more oil you add will limit the travel.....Taz69 knows more about this.....

What is a Medina @#$@$^#$ ?? Is it a KLX clone or a CRF50 hybrid clone? A style swinger or Parallel swinger........? MAkes a HUGE difference...... spring rates for the A-Style are about 30-40% lower also the valving is different due to the travel of the shock shaft........ different geometry..... You gonna road race this? That also makes a difference, because you NEED it to be tunable at the track! I say this because you are close to Circleville and its littered with nasty patch work in all but three turns.......... There are other tracks close to you that have a much nicer track surface. I have been to every track close to you other than Whiteland and Newcastle. You gonna pimp it? Then it does not need to be 100% dialed in. |

The Medina is a Pitster X4 clone or whatever. Based off the KLX. I raced my YSR at Circleville and know what that track is like, loads of different surfaces and a fun track. We will be at Fremont mostly next year and both my forks and shock are going to be adjustable but the springrate is where I'm needing info. I suspect the stiffer the better for a road track but I could be way wrong. It will be "pimped" as best as I can afford and the shock/fork combo is where I don't mind spending the dough. I have the TT92's already waiting here with in arms reach of this laptop. If you haven't hit Fremont I suggest you plan on it next year. Not as long a course as Circleville, closer, and better surface for sure!

Done fremont years ago....... a fun 1 gear track. Buy the FOx air shock for the KLX110 if that bike you have is a KLX clone of sorts Mostly racing in Michigan...... Have a full race schedule going, working on the 2010 event list......... We do have May 30th booked at G&Jkartway in southern Ohio........!! super fast, great track surface!!!!!!!!!! very reasonably priced to race compared to CRP imho....... same drive time for us from the north Working out the details for a MiniTT street race in southern Michigan for next September Invite only |

I am the pres of MIMRA......... I put on about 10-12 events in Michigan every year.......... In 2010 We will be racing at G&Jkartway Ohio May 30th, Stockbridge Michigan Sept 19th, the rest are undetermined dates at the following tracks: Palmyraspeedway (20 lap sprints), Jackson Speedway (endurance), Flint Autocity (practice and sprints), Myself and my kids have raced with USMGP, TheBlazzinBikers, SEMRA, and oyl. We have a growing group of riders....... We ride ICE in the winter and some natural terrain "TT style" dirt tracks in the warmer months. Should have a new web site up soon. |

I only did the BB thing two races, and did USMGP at Beaverun and Mid-Ohio. Fremont was okay (a 1 gear track on any 4S bike) but we sorta had/have better options real close to home. Its good to see Fremont is still letting people ride there for a reasonable price! You need to hit up gandjkartway.com during the week its only $10 a rider, SUPER frEEking Fast sticky smooth pavement! I bet its only a 2.5 hour drive for you. You will need sliders on your bike, don't trip on it just make them or buy them! The owner Gary Gregg is super cool |
