annodize Vs powdercoating

which parts should be annodized and which powdercoated.
heres the list
frame and swingarm - prob powdercoat
rims and spokes - ??
fork tubes - ??
shock spring - ??
all other alluminium bits on bike - prob annodized
Brake callipers - ??

Any special tricks I should know before taking them in eg. closing holes with bolts, etc??

Re: annodize Vs powdercoating

I would powdercoat everything imo

special tricks- they should be able to do the necessary prep work if they are any good but you might want to mention holes you want plugged and all that.

Re: annodize Vs powdercoating

you can't anodize steel so any steel parts will have to be powdercoated

Which will last longer on the swingarm - as this will prob scratch the most.

annodize has a very light flim to it making it look the way it does it holds up decent but powder coat will last longer on the swing arm

frame and swingarm - PC
rims and spokes - Spokes can't be ANO, PC only-but are hard to lace up after
fork tubes - ANO Only- PC with make them thick and loose holding strenght
shock spring - PC
all other alluminium bits on bike - ANO
Brake callipers - PC but need to be stripped down totally.

Alum= ANO
Steel= PC

they end up discoloring easier though, why wouldn't you powdercoat ALUM.?

You can pc alum. But typically people ano. it. It's lighter and doesn't flake. Good ano. doesn't fade easy either

cool ya, but powdercoat is done on aluminum alot and done correctly will never flake off. Also weight is negligible

Re: annodize Vs powdercoating

The PC I did on a swingarm chipped bad, but I had an ano. swingarm and it nicked up a little but never flaked like PC. My PC-er knows what he's doing too. I have had alot of PC on alum and yeah it holds up on some stuff but typically

Steel= PC
Alum=Ano

Ano. alum looks way better than PC stuff.

And I don't agree with "weight is negligible". Weight plays a huge roll on how bikes handle, especially pit bikes. Why do you think people are always trying to shave weight?

Ok I understand if you had bad luck with it but somethign must have gone wrong for it to chip. I have 20" alum. wheels on my truck powdercoated black for two years now (with new england winters) and they still look brand new when I clean them.

Weight on bikes is obviously a factor, my point was weight of ano vs powdercoating is negligible. Weigh the same two rims that were anodized vs two that were powdercoated and you will see what I mean.

yup. i had pc wheels on my last x2, and it flaked off everytime they hit a rock. and when u change a tire, o boy! might as well just get it pc'd again.

seth399, of pc is sooooo great, y doesnt excel powder coat their wheels? and how come no major wheel manufacturer for dirt bikes us pc? its cheaper the anodizing too.... hmm, Magic is correct on this one

I wasn't talking about rims specifically, more aluminum in general. You would anodize anything that isn't steel? Seems weird to me, but like you said you can go either way you want and it should look nice. I'm not trying to 'win a battle' I am informing you that aluminum parts can be powdercoated and end up better than anodized parts.

As far as why they don't powdercoat at Excel? I dont know but powdercoating involves spraying the powder and then baking the parts in an oven so maybe just due to being time consuming...not sure

well that is what I was asking you, you would anodize anything that isn't steel? As in, if it is aluminum (rim, case cover, lever, etc) you would only anodize it?

steel cant be anodized so anything steel has to be powder coated. i'd anodize the aluminum stuff though it looks better

I had a friend of mine PC an X4 swingarm semi-gloss black and even after a season of riding it still looked awsome. It had some knicks in it from rocks, but no pealing or flaking at all.
