Is mine bad? I get 990 ohms, and every 7th kick gives me 4volts is all. What SHOULD I have? And, can these stator-coils be repaired? Thanks a lot. Last edited by txkawboy; 02-29-2008 at 06:58 AM. Reason: clarity |

Come on, one of you gurus is bound to know this...

I haven't had any luck telling bad exciter coils from good ones with an ohm meter, they all read the same resistance (which I can't recall off the top of my head, 3.something ohms?). If the exciter coil is a large unit by itself on top of the stator plate, held on by two screws (Like an old 6v Honda stator setup.) then there is a replacement coil out there. If it's the Honda 12v style, I don't know of any cheap replacement. Given the cheap cost of import stator plates, I'd just swap a new one in and see how it fares. |

followup: yep, it was bad. Still unsure of the spec's for it, but a new one fixed the problem immediately and only had ~300 ohms resistance. (Got it off an old 1979 Yamaha DT175 before I spent $$ on ordering a new one.)
