rim lock ?

I'm installing rim locks after getting two flats at my last race. Is the rim lock supposed to pitch or grab the tube or just by having it in pushing on the tube good. Also was told to put baby powder in there? 12" rear...how much air to run in the tire.....thanks guys

A rim lock grabs the bead of the tire to keep it from spinning on the rim...they are a good idea as is the baby powder it keeps the tube from chaffing against the tire.I personally run 20 psi in both tires on my X4....hope this helps

Re: rim lock ?

the rim lock holds the tire on the rim. the tube goes between the rim lock and the tire. i use 30lbs in my tires and never had any problem. most people will tell you thats too much, but ive never had a flat or blow out.

Re: rim lock ?

Steveo when you drill for the rim lock, do it at a little more than 90 degrees from the valve stem. Make sure you pick a spot where the spokes are spreading and not crossing. Especially make sure you don't drill through the welded joint on the steel wheels. I hope this makes sense.

The baby powder is for the water/soap combo you use for the tire lube. Gets rid of the moisture.
I may help with chaffing against the tire??? I've heard that one before though.

I'm total against going 90 - 180 degrees away from the valve stem. The closer; the better/easier for tire installations. Leave about 4 - 6 spoke holes between your hole for the valve stem and the hole for the rim lock.

The underlined quote is very important too.

Re: rim lock ?

got one done in ten minutes...tube and rim lock. I heated the tire up in the oven. After using the soapy water the baby powder is like sludge. After an hour of swearing, I GIVE UP on the 2nd one. I've pinched 2 tubes trying to put on the Dunlop tire.....I'm defeated and my tubes deflated. Gonna drop it off now @ the cycle shop and cut my loses. Sorry if I've let you down

Don't sweat it. Even "easy" task are difficult if you don't have the proper tools and know how.

Re: rim lock ?

i spray the bead with silicon spray and put a little air in the tube after it's in the tire to keep the tube round .Use some good tire spoons and go a little at a time checking to make sure your not pinching the tube. After you have some of it mounted push the mounted part together and push it down into the rim for a little extra room . It's not hard take your time and watch the tube inside the tire .

Re: rim lock ?

got them done. Wanted to thank everyone for the support. That Dunlop always gives me a hard time. The more you do them...the easier it gets ...like anything else.
