SSR 70 Head / Clyinder Busted

Hi everyone, My son just got an ssr 70-c and took it for his first ride in the back yard. When he was finished the cylinder (or head) has a big chunk out of it. Up close it looks like it just fell out, like the metal was too thin or contaminated. I have attached a photo of it for review. As one would expect I have had no response from SSR or the dealer I purchased this from.

I am wondering if this void/open area leads to anything - like the inside of the engine. It was running fine and sounded okay. Could this just be cosmetic?

I have only worked on 2 strokes so have no idea what is actually connected to what. Thank you for your assistance.

Larry

That's not a problem, it's just the way the head is cast. If you look closer you'll see it's painted. Had something broken off, the edge would be raw.

Yep, that's designed-in. The opening is even bigger on race heads. It's sort of a cooling air intake, and exits near the spark plug. I grind the casting flash out to allow more air through, on heads I do.

Thank you for the replies. The opening was not there when I put the bike together though does it just pop out or something?? I was already to purchase a new engine!! This is great news. Thanks

Okay... looks like the opening on the head was there when I got it, just didn't realize it. Thank you all for posting!!
