tuning help???

1st off let me get this out of the way...im not tuning dumb at all ive built 3 turbo cars and dyno tuned my last 2 streetbikes...i just wanna see what kinda info anyone has on this...i just put a ssr 150 motor in my buddys bike and it has a new mukuni 26mm carb..to choke is the knob in or out?now at 1st i wanted to run really rich would barly idle and was blowing black smoke.so i checked to see what jet was in and it was a 190 so i went to a 175 and it got alil better but still rich and didnt want to idle so i went to a 150 runs better but dosent want to idle good so i moved the needle down one notch then it wants to idle high which is showing me it leaned it out..within a min the pipe was glowing red so deff too lean..so im thinkin i should go back to a bigger main jet and leave the needle as it was....anyone have any setup info on this carb/motor...the motor is in the stages of break in but just trying to get it able to get some hours riding on it....thanks for your help

Re: tuning help???

have you tried adjusting the air screw?

carbs are totally different from EFI tuning.

Re: tuning help???

You mentioned idle problems and main jet and needle changes in there a couple times. The needle and main jet don't come into play at all for idling; that's strictly off the pilot circuit. If you can't get an idle mixture that works without having the pilot screw almost all the way closed or farther open than 2 or 2-1/2 turns, you need a different pilot jet.

Main only affects running if the throttle's 3/4-full open. 1/4-3/4 throttle is the needle position. Idle is the pilot.

Re: tuning help???

problem is fixed guys...it was a small leak where the 12 way manifold adapter met the head..prob fixed she runs great.......Now on to my bike...after bike has warmed up when im running wide open and i just barley let of throttle to shift not using the clutch and get get back on the throttle bike cuts out for a sec then goes back to work...when im just playing around and i use the clutch and go throu the gears it dosent cut out....plug color is good..im thinkin maybe one size bigger jet...see what that does then play with needle...i tried leaning needled out but it kept hiccupping in the carb..so im thinkin its the main cause its wot im going back to....thanks for your help
