My Mood: | Upgraded yx 160, crunch?
Here's the story, I have the upgraded yx 160, when I went to kick start it the other day there was a nasty crunch but the bike fired up, I stopped the bike and drained the oil and on the plug it looks like the tooth of a gear. Questions: Is this part of the old problem with the kickstarter or is it somthing new? The bike runs fine still but I won't run it after what happened. My guess is that maybe it's some gear attached to the kickstart shaft that needs replaced, seems simple enough, I haven't split the case yet to see. Any idea's off hand? |

I bet its a tooth off your primary gear on the clutch or one of the gears for the kick starter. You'll want to take your clutch cover off and check it out, you may find some more teeth in there too.

I'll take it off tonight and post some pics, is it hard to replace or to buy the parts for that matter?

could be a tooth off the basket or the idler gear or the center clutch gear.

Ok two beers later here's what I have: This gear here right behind and to the upper right of the clutch has a small chip out of one tooth (needs replaced IMO but maybe not, opinions?) ![]() Then directly behind the clutch where the above gear connects behind the clutch is where the actual tooth snapped off, down behind here: ![]() So now I need a tool/nut to get this off: ![]() Then I need to know this, where do I get these two gears and the tool to take off the clutch basket, and do I need to replace the clutch case seal? It still looks good to me. Lastely, how fast can I get them. If I were guessing from what matmoto said I said it's a center clutch gear??? |

Make sure you double check that output shaft bearing. Last edited by MaXeD-OuT-PiT; 11-09-2009 at 08:30 PM. | |

Yep, that is where the problem is, you will want to double check the INput shaft area as this is where the YX engines fail now that the needle bearing area is stronger, move the input shaft up and down, fore and aft and see if you notice the bearing moving at all, this will indicate that the right side case needs to be replaced. The biggest flaw in the YX engine is really not the design of the case or bearings, or even the additional metal added with the needle bearing( this part is not a flaw? except that it now uses the shaft as an inner race that does wear), It is metalurgy, the low quality metal and type of casting process . because of this the yx engine will stretch this area to a point that the input bearing has alot of movement, this then allows the gears to ride at the top of the tooth , and break, sometimes even breaking the case. ok, I need to know where the input and output bearings are located, I know next to nothing about engines and I'm in the learning process. |

The input bearing will be the one exposed when you pull off the clutch basket, which the clutch and its shaft (input shaft) turn on. Output bearing will be the one behind the front sprocket and an oil seal. |

The input shaft is the one that the clutch "INPUTs" the power into the trans, the output shaft has the idler gear on it (the gear with the tooth chipped) , it "OUTPUTS" the power to the sprocket. take off the clutch and move that shaft around, if it has any movement, and the bearing is in one piece, the case needs replaced. |

The gears are being shipped to me now, thanks to Terry at Firepower! Hopefully since he's in the state next door I'll be running this weekend. Keeping my fingers crossed!

there isn't a need, my bearings are fine, I think it was a faulty gear in the beginning. China metal.... sometimes ya win sometimes ya lose...

OK, sounds good, my experience has shown that even if the bearings are good, with the stress of breaking the gear will cause the center of the YX case to allow the bearing to move, as I stated , up and down and fore and aft, with your clutch off, grab the shaft and move it, look closly and see if you see any movement around the out side of the race? I would be willing to bet that it has movement and the outer part of the race has a small gap between it and the case.

Bike is fixed and rocking!!!!!!!! It was an easy fix after getting the clutch nut! Thanks to everyone for their help! Especially Firepower, thanks Terry, and to T-bolt for shipping me a clutch uber quick! And thanks to Matified for the PM's and the advice! I freakin love this site! The bike seemed to run so much crisper after the fix.... could be in my head but it was so fun to get back on the bike after a week and a half down time. |
