My Mood: | What Is This Exhaust Thing?
There's a relatively known brand of China pit bikes. (Not a PM advertiser). On the new 70cc stocker model, there's an attachment to the exhaust. Is it for emissions?

I think it's where you plug in the trailer brakes, they just routed wire through the exhaust for that "clean" look.

Secundiary air inlet, to bring down emissions a little.

I think it's like an EGR valve in old cars. Exhaust gas recirculation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia They're modding our Minis into Dad's Oldsmobile! Al Gore, I hate you. |

EGR feeds a metered amount of exhaust into the intake stream, to lower combustion temps, which in turn reduces oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust. It's hard to see whether that doodad on the pipe connects to the intake or not. I'm guessing it's more a simplified air-injection deal, as mentioned above, to induce a bit more combustion in the exhaust near the port, where it's still hot enough. Actually I'd think the one end of the thing would be even closer to the port; air injection setups on a lot of cars had air tubes whose tips almost brushed the exhaust valve stems they were so far into the exhaust ports. My old Jeep 6 was like that. Imagine jetting a dirt bike to work well with EGR. Yechhh. Day may come, though...we have catalytic converters on some bikes, and EFI... Steve, what's up with your Z and your SL? Ever find a cover, etc.? Last edited by mexicanyella; 11-04-2009 at 08:17 PM. |

its the "tiny turbo" it uses all of your exhaust fumes and turns it into 50 pounds of boost

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automob...#Air_injection I got so frustrated with that Z and SL, I sold them both. Vintage stuff are great when nice and shiny and working fine. They're a nightmare when every part needs replacing. Lately, I find myself looking at CRF and even China stuff. | |
