My Mood: | What's better: New race head or Port and polish the old?
So lets here the pro's and con's of it. Which is better all around (money, performance, durability, ect.) a new racing head or porting and polishing your existing head? Remember this is what's better all around so don't weight your decision on just one factor like cost or performance. |

Which is better, an apple or a starfruit? Remember, this is an all around question, I'm not just considering taste but how well they'll wash my car too. See where I'm going here... It's not a cut and dry X is better than Y all around type of deal. It all depends on what you're starting with for a head, what you've got for a build, what your goals are, and what 'race head' you're comparing against. You've also got to factor in the person doing the head work, lots of variables. |

In most cases it's easier to get performance gains from using an aftermarket head. It's already got ( slighty better ) ports, bigger valves and a cam to get more performance out of your engine. Mind you that if you just plan on running a stock carb or exhaust, then the point of the more open head is mute because the bike is choked up. If you plan on doing more to your engine than just a performance head then you are heading in the right direction. If everything is going to stay stock, then maybe a ported stock head would be right for you. ( if it's ported right ) I like starfruit. |

Well so far so good, I like apples, never had starfruit. I've only had stock heads and never a performance head. The fruit example is so close to the mark it's scary, props to Kurlon on that one. I had mark at AHP port the head of a lifan 140 for me and put a race cam in it and there was noticable power gains but not the power gains I was hoping for or expecting. The lifan 150 stock power blows the ported 140 outta the water. The engine I'm talking about is the new lifan 150, with the oil filter. I'm currently running a 24 mikuni on it but switching to the 26mm vm soon. As it is I can barely handle the power that it has now but I want to prolong engine life and I'm always looking for more power weather I can handle it or not. :P |

Well there's your answer ... You can't get a better stock head casting than a Lifan BVH for those motors ATM so you're best to try a hi velocity port job , better cam , valve springs , better carb and pipe ... The fruit comparison is starting to look a bit "seedy" now ... |

BVH responds well to good porting, and TB's new head is claimed to be shipping now...

| Re: What's better: New race head or Port and polish the old? People have already given their ride impressions of it, so I'd say it's already out there. Not to mention it's already been shown multiple times that the BVH isn't the only option that can be shoved on those studs.

Could you put a 3 valve head on it and have it be awesome? Or am I just pissing in the wind on that one?

this new head rocks!!!(BVH) I run it. its worth it. did you know that there is a mild afrodesiac compound in starfruit? it typically only lasts for 1/2 hour after cutting though, just like the amino acid profile in fresh pineapple! |
