honda CRF100 roadracing mods

Hey everyone!
I am going to use a Honda CRF100 engine for roadracing. It has a Kitaco inner rotor ignition, 120cc BBR motorsports kit, K&N HA-1088 air filter, FMF Powercore 4T exhaust and a pd22 replacement carburator by RT.

Now because the engine is originally made for off-road use the top speed is not very high. Does anyone have an idea on how to get the topspeed up? I would really like to get it to like 65+ mph.

Takegawa sport touring tranny. Gonna be hard to find someone to order it for you and might be pretty pricy but that will put you well over 75mph if you have enought power.

Re: honda CRF100 roadracing mods

Actually the Takegawa transmission is really REALL expensive. I found it for $940 and that's like way to much! But if the transmission is really that important, won't a Honda CB100 transmission fit? That's a roadbike, so it probably has a different transmission.

Re: honda CRF100 roadracing mods

CB100 trans is different, and in the series with the old 125/175/185/200 engines. Your 5th gear is a .92 overdrive already, anyway. Your easiest method is sprockets, up in front and/or down in back. There's also the $255 clutch basket and primary gear, that raises overall gearing by 17% or so. Speeds up the clutch, reducing torque load on it. Not sure on the Tak, but the stock trans ratio drops are 39/26/19/19%, while the 80 bolts in and is 30/23/19/15% gearing drops. Tightens things up a bit.

Try calculating the RPM you're using now. The 45mm stroke XR doesn't mind a little buzzing The BBR cam is way too small, and the head needs some work to really zing. A bigger carb isn't a bad idea, either. Web 69/68 or 69 grind, with matching springs and retainers will add a bunch on top.

Re: honda CRF100 roadracing mods

Okey thanks for all the replies so far!

I think I am going to buy a Web 69/68 with matching springs and retainers and new sprockets. Any tips for the sprockets?

Now I would really like to know what my topspeed will be with this parts installed!

Re: honda CRF100 roadracing mods

I've got a NSR/NSF that I roadrace with a CRF/XR100 motor with BBR120 kit, 69 grind Webcam, lighter flywheel, kitaco cam chain, 24mm round slide kehin carb, etc.. and I gear it for the long tracks I race at. 16 front with 38 on the rear.
The major draw back with these motors (like said before) is the head. Get a super head and that will really wake up the motor. Also, the a oil cooler will help keep things cool when running that sucker at top speed, but you don't have the bodywork around the motor like I do, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. If you find that the power starts to "fade" after a while, then you'll want to look into an oil cooler setup.

Re: honda CRF100 roadracing mods

Hey!
I can't find a front sprocket any bigger than 15 tooth! And the smallest rear sprocket I could find was only 40! That's why I would really like to know where you bought your sprockets!

And the Kitaco cam chain, what is that for?

By the way, what is your top speed now?

Thanks for the replies so far, they're very useful!

Re: honda CRF100 roadracing mods

convert to a 420 chain, much easier to find front sprockets.

Re: honda CRF100 roadracing mods

Yeah.. sorry.. I assumed that you were running a 420 chain. Swap to a 420 and you'll find all kinds of sprockets! My rear sprocket is different then yours since I race a NSR/NSF

As far as my top speed.. I have no clue?? But, you can kinda see in this video of how fast I go against some of the KX65's.. This was a race at one of our short tracks. We race at BeaveRun in PA and I ran a 16 front and 38 rear

I'm on the red GP style bike on pole at the start of the race...

no one will say it but hondas always have very limiting heads, but solid design... I had to say it nicely to not offend anyone lol

Re: honda CRF100 roadracing mods

Didn't offend me.. That is the only thing I don't like about my motor in the bike.. the head is what holds back all the power. But.. for reliability and what not.. stick with the stock head. The CRF/XR100 motors are bullet proof in stock form and even with mild mods.
