| XR 100 Retro Frankenbike
Here is my latest project. It started life out as a 95' XR 100. Left over from my conversion build. I was look'n to build a one off retro Rattrod XR 100 Mod list: 74' XL 70 tank 77' XR 75 subframe 73' XR 75 side plates 79' XR 80 seat 86' CR 80 front end complete, forks, trees, disc brake, and 17" front wheel 78' XR 75 front and rear fenders 03' KX 65 Complete rear, swingarm extended 1.5" complete with, disc brake, shock, linkage, rear hub lased up to a 14" KX 85 rim. Full frame cradle Decreased rake 5* 07' CRF250R right side of twin pipe exhaust. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I still have some small odds and ended to take care of before some paint and powder coat. Probably won't get to it any time soon. I thinking classic red on red?? As for the engine will just be a basic 120 kit with a 24mm carb. I will need to address the suspension spring rate. For my big a$$. It has the stock spring at both ends. I did fresh'n the forks with new seals 10wt oil and lowerd them 1". Rebuilt the shock with 10wt oil, 180 psi nitro and added a few shims to the low speed compression, and rebound stacks, just to slow things down a bit. |

ive been debating a set those older cr forks for awhile now due to costs. are they a bolt on or do they require stem mods? did you cut the dampening rods to lower them?

I used a 86' CR 80 complete front end. The 86' CR stem is the same diameter as the stock XR 80/100's, which is also the same as XR/CRF 50/70. Bottom of the stem is 24mm and top 22.5mm. I ditched the XR's ball bearing for a inexpensive tapered conversion kit for a the 50/70 for about $20 through Tbolt. These forks and trees were a easy bolt on. They do requier fab'n a new steering stop. In the past I cross referenced some of the other mid to late 80's CR 80 trees. The bearing/stem, did change somewhere in the late 80's. However, I can't remember the year. To the best of my knowledge, all the disc brake CR 80 conventional forks, 86'-95' are the same 33mm forks. All disc brake 17"/19" CR wheels 86'-07, and brake calibers will also bolt on. I used a 1" piece of 3/4 PVC for a spacer under the damping rod to stop the fork from extending all the way. Any more than a 1" May have to concider a shorter spring. The stock CR forks are 31" from axle to top. Oil weight is the only way to adjust the damping on these forks. Or restrict the oil flow through the damping rods, weld up the orifices and redrill smaller. Hope this helps Last edited by gman; 10-26-2009 at 08:09 AM. |

That bike is ti-hiiiii-hitttts. I love it. I've always liked the red-on-red CRs, but how about if you just painted it up like a late 70s XR? With the red tank with the wide black stripe up the top? As if it were some factory Honda thing? Might be fun at vintage dirtbike meets; some people would give you some odd looks.

Looks awesome. I have a complete KX 85 rear end I would like to put on mine. Did you have to do any modifications where the pivot bolt goes through? I know my 85 swinger I will need to somehow make about 1 1/2" skinnier and somehow find some bushings to fit.

Thanks, Nope, the KX 65 swing arm was a bolt on, In regards to the pivot area. Even the bolt size is the same. I did have to offset the rear sprocket a little, for chain alignment. After I started this project, already finsh'd up the fab work, and purchased the 14" rear wheel/spoke kit for the 65 parts. I pick'd up a 03 KX 85 swingarm (cheap). The KX85 swinger looks very doable with some head scratching. I almost went in that direction. It's sooo easy to get side track'd on these custom projects...It was best that I continued on the path that I was on. Maybe the next one, I have another XR 100... lol! I'd be real easy to build a 14/12" wheel'd XR80/100 with the 65 swing'r and parts. Maybe even the PisterPro LXR rear? Anyone thinking SM.... 12/12" KX 65 swingarm'd XR100!!!!!
