Re: Monkey R's release

Look at the gear ratios on that engine and how they differ from the standard Monkey 4 speed gearboxes. One of the coolest minis Honda ever made, but like the ZB50, was an epic failure in the showrooms when new.

I am glad it was a failure here and a hit in Japan, it makes for a cool story and a killer rare mini. It wasn't exactly an Edsel, it was a hit in Japan and a miss here in the States. If you recall 1988 was a weird time in America, Micheal Jackson was considered a badass because of his "Beat It" video, break dance fighting was common(and you never knew who really won), Men's Fashion could be summarized by two words "Chess King"....
I love my Monkey R, and I am embarrassed to say I really don't know all the little differences between the ZB50 and the Monkey R(I am building a resto-mod). I know the tank, gas cap, frame, seat, bars, front brake, wiring and headlight/speedo are different. What other parts are Monkey R specific?
Wow, even if my list was complete-that is quite a few parts honda made for the Monkey R. You don't see them doing anything like that anymore, look at the last anniversary edition Monkey. I am even more impressed with my bike now, I think I'll pull out my tank/frame and stare at it : )

Re: Monkey R's release

The complete engine setup, left lower fork leg, front wheel, decals, controlls, mudguards (fr/r), swingarm, tail light, mud flap with Monkey R logo, rear sets on the R vs. regular foot bridge on the ZB, mirror, turn signals, exhaust, lower fork bridge (no reflector mounts on the R, don't know if the US spec ZB had them...), side stand, I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few.

Think about it: The list of parts that are exactly the same would be a lot shorter: wheel rims, rear wheel (although someone said it was slightly different as well), fork inner tubes, rear shock, fuel tap, top bridge, handle bar holders and a bunch of smaller parts...

Cheers!
Godfried

Re: Monkey R's release

Still doing great! Haven't had it out too much lately, but with spring coming up, it should get some air again soon! Still need to find some time to start tinkering with the Yoshimura MJN26 flatslide... Time, time, time, I wish I had more of that...

cheers!

Don't think I have any pics where it is clearly visible, it hides well under the tank/frame. Setting it up is not too difficult, except you need to take of the seat and tank a lot on the R to get jetting / adjusting...

cheers!

Re: Monkey R's release

The" R" is the coolest. With the suzuki release of the 1987 gsx-r50 gag about the same time, its hard to tell which manufactor thought of the mini race- bike concept first.Btw isnt the frame sticker is a little confusing(TWIN TUBE FRAME);isnt a " Tube " round by definition?
