trans trouble: new gear

Had to put a first gear in the ZB yesterday.Broke the first gear in my Take 5 speed. All seemed to be working o k .Built the motor , put it back in the bike and now the trans is locked up.I loosened and retighened the bolt that holds the shift drum in place.Seemed to shift again.
Used a drill with a socket to turn over the motor went thru all the gears and it is working again.Has anyone else had this happen to them.Anything to worry about.Dont need to break anything else. Thanks for any feed back.
There is a big bike rally here in two weeks so I need to have it ready so I can out run all the Harleys that will be in town .

I've had them lock up when you tighten the bolt at either end of the drum, without the drum being rotated all the way in the direction the bolt is being tightened first. Now I shift to top gear to snug the star and neutral to get the drum stopper bolt, assuming an all-up drum.

How can you avoid breaking the first gear in the Tak 5 speeds? Besides push starting.

needs some type of decomp to take the load off that gear.

Re: trans trouble: new gear

Started the bike all ran good.Went for a ride bike shifted good.Almost to the house I had the trans lock up.Blew another gear.It now needs five gears beween the two drives.Boy do I hate tranny work.
Depending on the cost and if parts can be found. What the next best trans.May be the Take 4 speed.
Want to rebuild the 5 speed but dont know what to do.

Re: trans trouble: new gear

Someone gave me a Tak 5 speed that had three blown gears. I ordered the new gears and planned on putting it in a Tak 124. Now I am not so sure......

I don't doubt the quality of Takegawa, I just worry about the frailty. Blowing 5 speeds seems to be far too common. I'm sure it is why Tak has come out with the new decomp heads. But for us with the older Super Head, I might have to just go with a 4 speed.....

Re: trans trouble: new gear

as long as you rotate the motor just past tdc before kicking
it allows you to gain a fuller rotation of the crank and is less likely to want to kick back

an old friend with a 124, 5speed,, fitted an inner rotor, he believed because he was so far advanced it caused the motor to fire and rotate the opposite way shortly before blowing up 1st gear

alternatively you could put a small hole in the stator cover and start from the crank like the jap dragsters do

Cut a hole in the stator cover so you have access to the crank nut that holds on the flywheel. install a cordless drill with a socket on it and spin it over. This is the same principal used for the ATC70's Or install an ATC70 pull start machined to work with the 12V flywheel setup. That would be interesting...

Re: trans trouble: new gear

I cant decide which would make me seem cooler; Carrying a Makita around with me or a pull start handle stiking out of my ZB......

Dan, have you ever seen an electric start Takegawa motor?

Technically it wouldn't be that difficult if you can get your hands on the 12V Cub motor here in the US that was electric start. PM Member Branyers (who owns a cub, a CT and posts here) has one on his cub.

I'd make a more simplistic setup. Remember the Evil Knievel toy when we were younger? The jet that had the parachute attached? Remember how you got the gyro to spin? Rip cord baby, rip cord.

In all seriousness, run the 5 speed and you may not have any issues. Or you may. Just take it easy kicking it over and don't do alot of downshifting or compression braking using the gearbox. I can't see you beating on that bike and wouldn't sweat it. If it gernades, go with the Takky or another 4 speed that should hold together without much issue.
