Re: Midsize of the Month November 2009

Hereby my Honda Ape 200cc.
Took me some time to finish, but it is finally done. Somewhere on the site there is a thread when I was building it.

It started as a standard 50cc Ape. I bought a 200cc liquid cooled engine, being told it would fit straight in. NOT! So the details are:
  • 200cc Lifan liquid cooled engine
  • modified frame: bent the front tube to fit the engine in, removed old engine brackets and welded on new ones; redrilled the swingarm pivot hole to align it with the front sprocket. Added two supports that lock into the old holes for support
  • Honda Sonic 125cc radiator, at the rear because no room in front (and looks cool). Added a fan, it's always on for extra cooling.
  • KSR front end, made a aluminum axle for the triple tree, because the Ape bearings are a size smaller than the KSR's
  • Wavey disc brakes, in front a bigger size than standard (calipers standard KSR), these really work (standard drums are nothing special)
  • Locally made exhaust, that goes from small to big ID
  • Modified KSR swingarm: +4", by aluminum extensions, removed top brace and added bottom brace, had to take off 2mm on each side of the bushings to make it fit the frame
  • Kitaco big $ seat, must have on a budget build like this! (Came with the standard bike)
  • chromed KSR wheels with 120 tires
  • Home made alu spacers and other small stuff to make everything fit
  • 16/28 sprockets. Ordered a 18-teeth sprocket, but the spline is too small for the shaft. I need some extra teeth for increased speed, the engine is more than strong enough to handle it. Any suggestions where to get 17 or 18 teeth sprocket?
  • standard paint for that low-profile look, had to cut some plastic to make the carb and radiator hoses fit
All that on a budget of about $3300
