CR85 Shock to CRF150f conversion?

I have a 2004 CRF150f, and I bought a CR85 shock (2007) to put on it. Anybody know the specifics on doing this?

I am interested in this too..I have a completely stock '06 CRF150F and would like to cheaply upgrade its ride...I think 1st should be fork springs and a fork oil weighht change....very soft

I don't think u can do it on a 150f with electric start. The CR85 shock has a resevoir...

I have BBR frt and rear springs. They work good but you can't adjust the stock shock--not enough dampening. Thats why I'm going to try the CR85 shock.

I'm interested in the conversion too. Since you have the CR85 shock the main match up will be the width of the mounts for the eyebolts and then room for the reservoir. If it ends up being too tall, you can probably get other linkage lengths to lower it down. If you don't mind, post some pics if you get things figured out.

Re: CR85 Shock to CRF150f conversion?

I'm in the process of trying to put a CR85 shock on my son's '03 150F right now. I got the rocker linkage from a 230F that supposedly will counter act the longer shock, but am finding that the shock still doesn't quite fit. It looks like the shock clevis and u-shaped linkage will need to be ground away to get it to fit.

Anyone else run into these problems?

You can stiffen up the front end quite a bit with some 1" OD washers. I weigh 200lbs and 12 washers (3/4" stack) on top of each fork spring really stiffened it up a lot. You can go up to a 1.5" stack, I had 15 washers in each fork but took a few out.

Re: CR85 Shock to CRF150f conversion?

here's some pics of the mods to my 07 to make the 80/85 shock work.I don't have the shock in because even with the heavier spring it is still too soft. The longer BBr linkage might make the differance, not sure.
Does anyone have the longer bbr linkage that could give me a measurement between the bolt holes?
anyways here's the pics.

Re: CR85 Shock to CRF150f conversion?

Scott-- How's it going bro! Check out the Reger Engineering site. They do the work on the 85/150R shock to make it work. Fortunately you have the kickstart bike, so it will work.

I'm planning a 150F project in the near future myself-- and I'm thinking a KX100 shock will be the ticket because you have to run the res opposite from the way it mounts on the 85/150R (to the left). If you look at the KX100 shock-- the res is not as far forward as it is on the Honda shock. This will allow a bit more clearance between the frame tube and the res. I've seen the Honda shock in place on the 150F, and the res is mighty close to the frame tube.

I'm wanting to run a 14 inch rear rim on it, with a 17 inch wheeled 150R front end a la Reger. I'm wondering if the rear 150F hub will allow it, and if you can get a 50 tooth rear sprocket for it to compensate for the 14 inch rear. Anybody know anything about this? I'll start a new thread about it. --L*64

Re: CR85 Shock to CRF150f conversion?

For the 150F (kick start version) the CR85 shock is a simple bolt on with only a slight mod done to the lower shock clevis. To end up with the same ride height as a stock CRF150f shock, you'll nee to shorten the C to C distance between the top and bottom mounting holes on the CR85 shock, by .740". Be advised, the CR85 clevis is threaded on one side, so if you want to use the same mounting bolt, take the thread dia. into consideration BEFORE you do any drilling.

Now that it's mounted... Turn you attention to the spring, oil and valving. Not to mention a refill with gas...

Now throw the 230 linkage or swingarm into the mix and all bets are off... You'll need to do some homework to make this combo work right. Think way heavier spring!! Like in the 10kg+ range!! Depending on rider weight of course...

My advice is two fold... On the cheap, have your stock CRF150F rebuilt, resprung and revalved to your specs. For a mid range project... Have a CR85 shock doctored up like the stocker. Here, any spring heavier than about 7kg will endup being a custom... A bit higher in the scale is Works. These shocks seem very popular and are built quite well.

Then... for a top of the line conversion... You have Fox, and of course, Ohlins. Both of these will be basically custom made for you personal application. And they are NOT cheap. But the best never is!!

Good luck with your projects!!!

Edit: Need 150F parts? Check out my post in the "feelers" section of the classifieds. I may be parting out my S/M project bike. Egine, frame, wheels.... The whole deal right down to the last nut and bolt!! PM me if you're interested in anything!! Some of my spares and "take offs" are already available!!

Re: CR85 Shock to CRF150f conversion?

I ended up using a 6.2 kg/mm spring for a 125 lb. rider. The static and ride sag worked out good with this spring rate.

The rebound clicker needed to be turned all the way in to compensate for the greatly stiffer spring rate and seemed to work well for light MX track riding, but I may try some revalving to allow for more adjustability.

Re: CR85 Shock to CRF150f conversion?

hey L*64, before you buy the kx 100 100 shock check that the res. will clear the carb/pod air filter.

I used a spring off of an early 80's xr 200, machined a spacer for it and have it mounted on the CR80 shock. The KG/inch seems to be about right for my weight,185 lbs. I haven't tried running it hard yet but the sag heights are pretty close to recommended values. Ive added a couple of shims to the rebound side and removed one from the comp. side of the piston. These are just starting points as i am not a master suspension tuner.
I'll post pics later.
bike is an 07

Re: CR85 Shock to CRF150f conversion?

Swish-- I'm working with an '05 kickstart model. I called PR2 (Fox distributor) to see if they could do a CR85 shock. I've got to get back to them tomorrow or Friday. If you look at the 85 Fox shock, the res comes off of the shock body at maybe 10 degrees. That will allow more clearance than the stock CR85 shock will between the res and the frame.

The other option would be a custom length Works with the res pinned at a 45 degree angle to the top mount. Works is kinda hit or miss. I have one on my 110 that I love, but I had them set one up for a KX65 pit bike project, and I had to send it back because it was such junk.... I have a Fox on my KX65 pit bike, and it's awesome. If I can run a Fox, I will. ---L*64

Re: CR85 Shock to CRF150f conversion?

What's a remote res. shock worth,I think that would be the best way to go.I've got a couple sitting in the shop i might try and fix up,one will need a longer shaft and res. hose but should be doable for under $150.The valving will be the biggest challenge.I wish it would warm up a bit, rain and 5 degree C weather is not the nicest for riding.
