Hey, I want to get my rims and hubs anodized/powder coated but I can't afford the professional lacing and truing. Can somebody walk me through the process?
Thanks!

Re: Re-Lacing Wheels

you may want to search for a video. I've never done it, but following a video is about the only way I would even think of trying it. I do know from have to true some severly mangled chinese wheels that it takes patience and practice. You may want to save the money until you can pay a professional to do it.

Re: Re-Lacing Wheels

take multiple pictures of the wheels before disassembly and figure out the pattern. pay close attention to which spokes go on each side of the valve stem. It just takes patients to build. Some guys choose to put all spokes in the hub, use masking tape where the spokes cross to get the pattern set, then carefully insert everything into the rim. After the rim is built, I install it on the bike and use a feeler gauge to first get the hub centered in the rim. Then relocate the gauge and work on side to side centering. Like I said it takes patience to learn, but once you figure it out, you can save yourself a lot of time and money. I have even gone as far as balancing my wheels by using lead solder wrapped around the spoke near the nipple, but that's a different subject. Every little bit helps. Good Luck

Re: Re-Lacing Wheels

It's easy as pie... just have patience!! An old swing arm makes a good trueing stand. Or you can use your axle on some sawhorses or blocks if they are tall enough. After you have taken your pics, and have the spokes put back the way they came out. You can start the trueing. Use blue masking tape around the outside of the beads, cover them up. And run a strip next to the spokes all the way around inside the rim. Loosely tighten the spokes till they all have about the same # of threads showing, or they all have the spoke seated about the same depth in the nipples. When you spin the wheel, hold a piece of chalk steady close to the rim center so the chalk "bounces" so to speak off of the rim as the wobble in the rim passes the chalk. Now, on the opoosite side of the rim from the chalk mark, tighten every other spoke about a 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Wipe chalk off and repeat tightening every other spoke opposite the chalk on the other side of the rim from where you started. As you go, you will see that you need to use smaller adjustments. WHen the spokes get tight, you have to loosen opposide side spokes to allow movement. After you have the rim and hub centered, work on side to side trueing so the rim spins without wobble. Continue to work the center and side alternately until you have the rim true. It may take a few tries, but after you get started, you'll see how easy it is. You can keep track of where you are in alternating spakes with bits of tape as refernce points, plus you can move them around as you go. When you are done, remove all the tape.
