New to dirt bikes, need some help/advice.

I'm new to dirt bikes, but I just bought a 2000 honda xr70 from this guy for $125. He told me that it was sitting for 3 years in his garage, that it needed the crab cleaned, and a magneto. from what I can see, did some research and it's missing a left side crank cover too. I can take some pics if anyone wants/needs to see it.

Anyways he told me it needed those two things to run. carb cleaned and magneto. well im not really sure what a magneto looks like, or where I can get one for cheap. So any help or advice is very much appreciated =]

p.s. sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I'm thinking an SSR150r or Pirrana160r gas tank and plastic kit is all you need to do it.

Re: New to dirt bikes, need some help/advice.

Ok, this is what i got. $125 2000 Honda XR70R, i think i got a really good deal lol; even if i have to buy the rest of this stuff.

the magneto plate (is that right?)

Fly wheel (right?)

i have nothing else, the pictures shows what i have. Now i was looking up those pit bike parts like T Bolt told me to do, is it right that xr50 parts fit perfectly on xr70's? another thing, these one's look nothing like what i got:

IGNITION STATOR MAGNETO PLATE 125CC PIT BIKE XR50 IS01:eBay Motors (item 330280967513 end time Sep-17-09 19:48:41 PDT)

Ignition Magneto Plate 50-125cc Dirt Pit Bike Honda:eBay Motors (item 370247968023 end time Aug-27-09 0445 PDT)

guess they are just like aftermarket kits. with the first one i still need to use the flywheel I'm guessing, and the second one doesn't need a flywheel right?

also i was thinking i should change the oil/s before i start this; sat three years like the guy said.

Re: New to dirt bikes, need some help/advice.

I have a GPX ORK full lighting stator igniton and matching flywheel. It is alot lighter than the stocker and just a bit heavier than the IRK...$50 shipped...I can throw in a harness and matching cdi for $15 extra. I also have a nice cut Honda ignition cover for $40.
$100 shipped for everything

Re: New to dirt bikes, need some help/advice.

They are used but nothing wrong with them. You can buy a cheaper full sized China rotor setup new(but not the ORK)...The honda covers are not as easy to come by but they are out there.

Re: New to dirt bikes, need some help/advice.

lol, well took me a bit but i figured out what ORK and IRK are after reading a bit on sites. I think I'm gonna go with a IRK cause they're lighter and said to be faster on the response. So i seen the kms and sgr irk's and they look pretty much the same as the ebay ones; just maybe different color coated wires. also found ignition cover for little over 20 on ebay as well. but that's only if the xr50 ignition cover fits on the xr70.

Just so you know the IRK will not run lights.

Re: New to dirt bikes, need some help/advice.

Like Blackwoodz said, a ORK can run lights if ya want and they are a little lighter than a stock mag...a IRK is even lighter and makes the bike zing like a 2 stroke or a really warmed over 450...the Ebay IRKs are okay but you will run into issues with them...the best IRK is a KITACO...but they are pricey...well ya get what ya pay for eh

semi auto means there is no clutch cable. you just click through the gears.
