urgent question about changing clutch

quik question im about to change the clutch plates and don't have a shop manual is the nut that holds the basket on, counter-clockwise to remove the nut? or clockwise, im taking it apart right now , and do they use any locktight from the factory on that thread? and where is the best place to hold /lock the basket from turning when poping the nut loose?

Regular righty tighty lefty loosey on that bolt. No loc-tite. Just make sure you bend the locking tab over when you put it back on. Just use an impact wrench, it will loosen the bolt before the crank can spin.

Lean the bike over. Make sure the petcock is off and the tank is below half full.

Re: urgent question about changing clutch

thanks , all is working well , kinda nerve racking without a manual i used a parts schmatic online to put it back together , i put in ebc brand , and the clutch plates work great but i also ordered the ebc springs , and they are slightly larger diameter so they wouldnt fit in the basket seats so i put the stock springs back in, thats the only disapointing part
the number matched up but the packaging says for kx60 and instead of 4 there were 6 i have feeling these were kinda a after thought for ebc.

Re: urgent question about changing clutch

just to save anyone else the trouble DONT use the csk18 springs they dont work in the 50/70's some cataloges say they work some say they dont make a spring for the 50/70 for sure the ebc's DONT WORK! they are for the kx60

i used the bbrs and they work great shifts much smother and didnt notice anymore energy to shift it for the little guys

Re: urgent question about changing clutch

Here are the listings from the 2009 EBC catalog, the springs are listed as fitting both model bikes.

The OEM Honda XR/CRF50 springs have a different part number than the XR/CRF70, is it possible you might have a 50 clutch assembly in your 70?

Re: urgent question about changing clutch

i didnt know oem part numbers were different ON 50/70 hhmmm.
anyway the bottom end on 50/70 are pretty much the same thought i heard the crank was beefier ? anyway i have /had two 70's (sold one last nite) and they had the same springs the ebc's , just to give you an idea ARE about 1/8 wider and about 1/4-1/2 longer , i think once you assemble the thing the springs are completly comprssed , when i installed it it wouldnt shift at all ,even bent the little triange ball thing that sits on the clutch probably from me trying to shift it, ebc needs there **** strait caused me alot of waisted TIME and money.
i ordered two sets so they were packaged right,
