Importing new pit bike into Canada

Hey, I bought a 125cc pit bike from Orion pit bike Sales in Texas, and I'm planning on going to pick it up within a couple weeks or so and i was wondering if anyone had any trouble at the Canadian border importing these bikes, I'm having second doubts of not getting the bike shipped directly to my house still in the box and just go ahead with hiring a broker and pay the customs and duty and taxes and all that junk, that go to the border and have them say i cant get it imported..

like i said the bike is brand new out of the crate, i shipped it to a buddy of mine outside of Boston so it's closer for me to go pick it up, i know i'm not allowed to buy a brand new vehicle (car or motorcycle) from a lot and import it into canada but i was wondering if a dirt bike would fall under a different class, would be classified as a motorized vehicle, the pitbike is a dirt bike so it should be classified as a competition bike therefore exempted from the RIV program? i called canadian customs they said they just need a tittle of the bike and a 17 digit vin number and finally a off road label, describing that it's a competition bike or something,... i was wondering if anyone would have any tips or things to look out for before i cross the border, i think im suposto advise the us border 72 hours ahead of time before i export a bike? and idd have to be in the us 48 hours in order to have duty free limit, and possible a 40oz hah

anyways any helpful tips or advice would be very helpful thanks!

Re: Importing new pit bike into Canada

There needs to be stickers on the bike in both official languages stating that it is a closed course competition use only bike. 17 digit vin is irrelevant because it cannot be registered and/or insured because it is RIV exempt. Basically follow these guidelines.....
Guidelines for Importing Pocket Bike Type Competition Vehicles into Canada - Vehicle Importation - Safe Vehicles - Road and Motor Vehicle Safety - Road Transportation - Transport Canada

Re: Importing new pit bike into Canada

I crossed the Border with my new pitbike yesterday, overall i believe it Went pretty well, I only had to pay 127.05$ CAD, Pit bikes are exempt from the Canadian RIV program providing they have a off road label that's intended for a closed competition only and a 17 digit VIN number. My pit bike manufacturer was Orion, they had the off road label on the bike and the 17 digit VIN, They had written on their license terms and agreement that the bike is intended for a day time closed competition course and these two items are required by US customs and Canadian Customs.

-Before I crossed the Border to pick up the bike I faxed the tittle and invoice of the bike 72 hours in advance.

-Before crossing back into Canada, you need to get US customs clear the exportation of the bike, this process went fine, they simply checked the 17 digit VIN number on my frame to verify that it matched the invoice and tittle of the pit bike.

I made sure I was in the USA for 48 hours prior to crossing back, this enabled me to claim a total of 400$duty free from my total value of the bike, therefore saving me some tax down the road, I had to pay My provincial tax rate of 13% (New Brunswick) and finally 67.95 came to 6.1% duty.

thanks for the people that wrote on this thread to help me import my bike

If you have any questions of importing a pit bike don't hesitate to contact me. I have a few good contact names and numbers to help you guys out,

Cheers from Canada!

Re: Importing new pit bike into Canada

right on im coming to arizona for a few weeks and was going to buy a bike or 2 and bring it back since the prices are so damn cheap

I bought a mustang in spokane few years ago came back and re sold it for almost double what I paid for it
any new vehicle is about 25% cheaper in the states compared to buying it here its rediculous I dont know why any canadian would get raped and buy anything motorized here
